this is such a good record omg premiered her new single during the week: Elliott Green Finds Respite in the Midst of Loss on “Goodness”
One of my favorite discoveries late into the last year & it was all thanks to Mt. Oriander. Can't wait for the album!
Astonishing! The opener is really good and it was the last single to be pre-released that I omitted - that was a great decision - though it was quite easy, it was only a few days left to the premiere.
Okay so I never listened to this in full but per the posts in the Julien thread I listened and this is a carbon copy of Turn Out The Lights by Julien. That isn’t a criticism but the influence is very strong.
Even the newest EP sounds very much like Julien. It’s one thing to be influenced by her but sounding THIS similar…I don’t know. I’m all for Julien influencing a newer generation of singer-songwriters but if they’re (or at least if Elliott is) just going to sound exactly like her…I’ll just listen to old Julien haha. Now, this is just my opinion of course. If others dig this then that’s great, but it’s just a bit too much for me.
Okay I know all of us in our replies tried not to be mean because this is a real person with real feelings and I know all of us on here weren’t trying to be mean, just pointing out the similarities and how it’s a bit odd but Someone in the Julien/boygenius fandom made a tweet calling her out/heavily mocking her which gained a lot of attention and that’s just not cool
oh, this exactly. What I try to keep in mind, it's all on the internet and I'd see no reason to make somebody else feel shitty about themselves for nothing. It's also not like there is anything she could be "called out" on in my opinion. It might be quite odd how similar some of those aspects are - ok - but it's not like one person goes and makes the same tattoos as the other or something, we're looking at influence/style etc., maybe people get a little too precious about it. I think this is that rare chance of when one's influence lines up so well with their own predispositions, it consequently creates similarities and takes longer to grow apart into something more distinct. For example, Julien got no trouble copying let's say Elena Tonra from Daughter; while their natural features differ (different singing voices) and it instantly brings something new to the table. Then there's a chance some artists might want to be playing a specific type of music AND at the same can sound very familiar doing so, I'm pretty sure it boils down to the simple aspect if it comes from the heart, and then it should only be left for people to decide if they want to follow/listen to more of the "same" or if it's not their cup of tea and move on. (made this post too long, but I'm also processing my stance on that, sorry, I'll try to skip the topic and go back to enjoying the music)
Anyone attacking Elliott or being a dick to her is not cool but the people calling this a bit odd or questioning the music/aesthetic/etc…I get it, the similarities are just so blatant that someone can’t just do that and not think they will face any criticisms or questions (within reason/having the feelings of the individual in mind) but you can do that (have criticism/ask questions) without being an asshole. The stans don’t understand that though and now it’s led us here. Although I think Elliott’s tweets were mainly directed at the crazy stans and I fully agree that those fans are/were being rude.
