Elite 8 (New Comedies): Nathan for You vs. BoJack Horseman

Both of these shows broke the mold, exploring deeper and darker themes at times that made them difficult to call just "comedies". However, there can only be one. Who goes on to lose to Seinfeld/The Simpsons?

 

Nathan for You by a lot.

 

I voted for BoJack but could easily switch. I admire BoJack Horseman for never really resting on its laurels, always finding new ways to surprise you. They used the Netflix format admirably, with single episodes that might have been butchered or cut on a network, stuff like the funeral monologue or the underwater episode.

 

I liked the underwater episode a lot. Might have been my favourite of what I saw.

 

Nathan, definitely. Finding Frances is perfect

 

Wild to me that these are the two “new comedies” that made it. I like Bojack enough but would have chosen a dozen shows over it.

It is a miracle that Nathan for You managed to make episodes like Finding Frances. You start with a harebrained idea, but the paths the show takes are the real sweet spot of the show.

 

Two of my favorite shows in recent memory but NFY has to take it.

Nathan for You is a better comedy and one of the most original shows I've ever seen, but Bojack is a better show overall. It's a really well told story and pretty inventive itself. Two of my 3 or 4 favorite shows in the whole bracket.
