Is.... is that considered a spoiler? Genuinely apologize if so. Since it’s not a plot point or even a direct quote of dialogue and has absolutely zero context, spoiler tagging didn’t even cross my mind. I’ll edit my post regardless.
Haha sorry, out of context it does seem like a pretty random joke. I was talking to my friend earlier about spoilers so I had it on my mind. Anyway I’m just biding my time until I can see this masterpiece tbh.
Saw it, was great, very emotional. I was kind of waiting for something big to happen but its so much more realistic than that.
This was so good. I agree with others that the car scene feels a little too out of place, like just a little over the line. But then I also think that’s just me not liking being THAT uncomfortable and that really is a lot of girls’ experiences. Either way, fantastic movie.
Really enjoyed this. I’m not sure I have ever felt more cringe during a movie in my life. There were so many times where I found myself slumped down to the bottom of my chair, feeling just as small as Kayla. I do think it sort of slogged towards the end and, while that final scene with Gabe was funny, it felt more like a post credits scene that was tacked on. Still pretty amazed Bo made this and at 27, no less. I feel like a failure!
As for the car scene, it was easily the hardest scene to watch, but I didn’t find it to be unwarranted, unrealistic, or out of place at all. And it surprised me, and I feel it’s rare for a movie to really go places you don’t expect.
Side note: I’m so glad cell phones and social media weren’t so ubiquitous when I was in Jr High/High School
I love that this was short and that besides the car scene nothing super dramatic really happened. Really made the movie feel focused and grounded to reality. I wasn’t a Bo Burnham fan before but that may have to change.
Agreed. It really proved to me that he was willing to portray what life is like for teenage girls. If you feel it was out of place, I’m just glad you’ve been lucky enough to not experience something like that.
I saw a small bit of this before the screening at the drafthouse yesterday and it piqued my interest but didn’t know what it was, really appreciate you linking me to it! Edit: uh this is actually kind of a bop, not sure if that was the point but I’m into it, makes me want to watch one of his specials.
Also worth noting that this isn’t just an extremely accurate portrayal of Kayla’s life, but her dad as well. I took my mom to see it with me and she really loved how true the depiction of her father and his emotions were even if she didn’t understand some of the youth jokes like Gucci and the dabbing and lit. And as a boy I also felt uncomfortable at some of the harder realities of my youth. I never quite had a car scene experience because I was always way more of a Gabe and I’d like to think I had more compassion, respect, and common sense than that, but I can relate to the false sense of confidence that came with a girl’s attention and the reckless abandon of some of my actions and some of the silly ways that I tried to impress them. All in all I love this film the more I think about it. Sorry for the double post y’all!
If you have Netflix, watch Make Happy like today. That’s the special that the song is from and it’s my favorite comedy special of all time, hands down.
