Obviously felt a lot like No Country at times, but I’m just really glad both Aster and Peele have given us 2 GREAT neo westerns in the last 3 years.
People who are too dug into either side of the political spectrum & not willing to be mocked are probably the ones that are hating on it. My favorite detail on the sheriff’s character was “your” being spelled wrong on the sticker on his car haha. also, solid gold magikarp, perfect name for a tech company
My understanding is that the COVID stuff (and by extension, all of the 2020-specific politics) we're not part of the original script, and while they're definitely a primary part of the film, they feel more like really great decoration for the unraveling of Joe's life. I do wish Lou's background and Austin Butler's character were a little further explored/developed. Minor complaint, more so just interested in knowing a little more about them separately as characters. Also, the ending of this (the reveal of Joe's fate) felt SO Dr. Strangelove to me (complimentary).
The Austin Butler subplot was honestly the only thing I could have done with out here. I’m not a Butler guy anyway but it felt like it could have been excised from the film completely. Just seemed like a hat on a hat at that point. (Thought about Swayze in Donnie Darko though)
The shot where Joe is stabbed in the head a second time and his vision splits was fucking TUFF and I feel bad for that Pueblo cop.
There were 2 brothers next to me that were chatting a bit here and there during the movie but not loud enough to be distracting but after that scene the one brother loudly says what the fuck?? how isn’t he dead?? he got stabbed twice in the head?? and then loudly talked a few times the last 10 minutes it pissed me off!!
So what was the deal with Joe's assailants? We're they actually supposed to be ANTIFA terrorists, or am I missing something between like, the private jet and the ability to rig up the landmine murder broadcast and all that shit? Hired guns for Solidgoldmagikarp, maybe?
I think they were mercenaries hired by some right wing billionaire or whatever to make it look like antifa was doing all that shit
the mercenaries didn’t fully work for me at first because we just got the quick scene of them on the plane and then the bombing in the field and the shoot out but I remembered Joe looking through the phone he found and they were responsible for a lot of the escalation of the protests and what not so it works for me more than it initially did. Good movie.
Landmine scene felt like it jumped the shark a bit but I also kind of feel like it wouldn't be an Aster film if he didn't take things off the rails at some point lol
Seems to be the one complaint everyone is in agreement on is the undercooked Emma/austin stuff. Not really sure what to make of that, aside from vulnerable people being easily swayed by messiah / guru figures, a topic already well-covered and maybe not essential in this (or go even harder on it)
I liked the Butler stuff and didn’t mind it being “underdeveloped.” Felt like a good added layer/angle to the whole “everyone is going crazy with how society is crumbling” core of the film. Like, the religious cult and Joaquin losing Emma helps flesh out the tapestry of this heightened version of our world and the paranoia it amplifies.
I feel like if it wasn't Emma Stone and Austin Butler that part of the story wouldn't feel underdeveloped. It's pretty essential not just in fleshing out the world's madness, but Joe's as the story goes on. Once he loses Louise, you know it's about to get dark. Also, somehow the Firework scene was one of the tensest in the whole movie. It might be my favorite on first watch. I laughed, but I was also so stressed out.
Seated for the movie! Can’t believe I made it - spent most of last night convincing myself to just see it another time so I could sleep in.
I need to find time to see this by myself as my wife is a big no on this thinking it'll be too dark and triggering (I'm sure it will be - I'm just okay with that). Interested reading and seeing what ya'll think as so far the reviews are all over the place.
