Yeah Beau is a masterpiece, I pretty much trust him with anything at this point - especially with a cast like this. Considering how divisive Beau was, I also feel like the polarizing reviews for this honestly have me more excited.
This was wildly depressing and I'm not sure any of it came together like it was supposed to, but it was also a banger and I hope A24 keeps giving Ari Aster blank checks to make fucking crazy movies
People who didn't like Beau are NOT gonna like this. Some people who liked Beau probably won't, either. A lot of people are not gonna like this lmao. But it sure is something. Going to be ruminating on it for a while, which is a good sign.
I (respected & appreciated aspects of, but) didn’t like Beau, and I liked this. Great movie. Tense and awkward and funny.
I don't know if I can think of another movie with this level of tonal whiplash lol. Beau was pretty absurd throughout, or at least became more absurd incrementally throughout its runtime. This takes a SHARP left turn at the halfway mark that folks are probably expecting based on the trailer, but still...phew. The mayor's kid's friend becoming a right-wing grifter was fucking hilarious
Loved this. Thought it was so keenly observed and the filmmaking was A+. Ari’s best script? Midsommar and Hereditary are probably still my 1 and 2, respectively (and I like Beau a lot), but I’m glad he’s not making “traditional” horror anymore. He’s really gifted and I’m excited for all the genres he’s going to explore in the future.
don't know if i'm gonna get the chance to see this in theaters (moving in a little over a week), but i'm glad to hear people enjoy it!
I actually also did this today, because after seeing this, my brother invited me to see Superman with him and his kids. What a weirdly popular doubleheader!
Immediate gut take ranking of Ari 1. Hereditary 2. Beau (adore this more and more on rewatches) 3. Eddington 4. Midsommar (not for me at all)
Everything with the white activist kids shouting about white supremacy and privilege, etc., was so funny in such an awkward way, lol.
Something might be wrong with my brain that I was on this movie's wavelength the entire time. It never lost me and I kept thinking it would. Sort of loved it? I guess I understand why it would be divisive but what really surprised me was how great the plot and script actually were. Critics made it sound like it's a one more COVID commentary but it felt like more than that. Also, one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. Again, something might be wrong with my brain.
Insanely divisive across the people I follow on Letterboxd. Half star/1 star reviews as well as glowing ratings
