Chazelle hasn’t made a great movie. Whiplash and First Man are both good. Half of Babylon is good half of it is dogshit. La La Land is bad.
Babylon, La La Land and Whiplash are all pretty much perfect films for me, Chazelle would come just after Aster for me in this conversation, with Eggers third.
I think so far Aster is pretty easily the best of the names mentioned. All 4 of his films are excellent and he's shown the most willingness to take risks that pay off Eggers great, but much more narrow scope, not sure how he would do outside his lane Gerwig great but trajectory makes me nervous Safdies and Schoenbrun high potential but sample sizes too small Chazelle and Coogler eh
Paul Thomas Anderson is the best Generation X director. Baby boomers is hard but it would be Claire Denis or Steven Spielberg or David Lynch. Silent Generation is probably Scorsese.
A nice little detail in Eddington was the slogan saying "your being controlled". Grammar standards have fallen so much in this country and some podunk sheriff would use that.
yeah, harder to choose once we start considering foreign filmmakers. in terms of one of the best alive right now, Apichatpong Weerasethakul is up there. I also love Reichardt, Cuaron, Cosmatos, Miyazaki, Jenkins, Sciamma...
It gets so much harder when you talk about older generations because a lot of the best millennial filmmakers have either not made their first movie yet or are still finding their voice. Some of the great filmmakers don't break out until their fifties.
Trying to finally watch this but my max keeps lagging and fucking up :( tried reinstalling and it's not my internet because all my other streaming apps are working fine
That helps, but you also have to take into account the quality of those films. You have prodigies like Paul Thomas Anderson who had a masterpiece with his second film at the age of 27, but I don't think you have experienced enough at that point. So much of the all-time great pop/rock/rap music has been written and made by people in their early twenties but is there even one notable Generation Z director yet?
Emma seligman and cooper raiff whether you like their two movies each or not they are “notable” also really liked sorry baby from Eva victor this year.
Seligman is a very late millennial but Raiff does fall into Generation Z by a hair. Victor is a millennial too.
Somewhat well known. There are lots of Generation Z filmmakers who have probably not gone beyond small film festivals yet.
I don’t think any are anywhere close to household names then, so I agree with you. Cooper Raiff has a dedicated following and is certainly developing his craft, so he would be the closest.
It is funny that no one has mentioned Xavier Dolan who has been around for so long and is still younger than most of the people we have mentioned. His career really fell off.
