Just finished. Definitely my film of the year so far. I can’t post anything deeper yet, as I’m still processing, but.. wow.
saw this last minute when some other plans fell through but really enjoyed it. probably my second favourite of his after Midsommar, def his funniest movie. the cut to what happened to Brian after the massacre had me gasping
shoutout to the older couple near me (they actually took the seat I booked but I digress) who were super loudly reacting to everything and who, just before Joe saw the white supremacy sculpture loudly exclaimed "he's got Covid!!!" like it hadn't occurred to them at any other point the previous 2 hours lol
I’m watching this again and it’s even better the second time. It’s still very funny, but it is feeling much darker to me this time around.
The first time I watched I completely missed the Michelle Obama trans conspiracy stuff during Brian’s montage. Jesus.
My Emby server is down and I can't log into Plex on my TV for some reason and I'm furious lol really wanted to rewatch this weekend
I have been thinking about the "YOUR BEING MANIPULATED" sign more than maybe any detail form a piece of art this year. I am excited to rewatch this soon. I have a feeling I will still feel it goes off the rails a bit in the third act, but am also starting to feel (especially since the Charlie Kirk stuff) that this could go down as one of the essential pieces of media from the 2020s. Between this film and Geese's "Trinidad," ("THERE'S A BOMB IN MY CAR"), it really feels like paranoia is a defining artistic trait halfway into the decade. Been thinking of writing something about that, but still kicking it around in my head.
I have also been thinking of the YOUR BEING MANIPULATED sign a lot lately. Even drunkenly rambled about it recently to someone who hasn’t even seen the movie, lol.
I found a $16 bootleg of the A24 shirt on TeePublic, but I'm afraid everyone will just think I'm illiterate. Lmao
first grimace calls me a moron now you call me nearly 40 just not a good day to be me on the internet
This might be my favorite of the year. I think about it more than OBAA anyway, even if that is the better film.
This is still easily my favorite. It was funny seeing the OBAA thread seemingly unanimously declare that movie better than this one, when I pretty easily prefer this one. That was impressive on a craft level and very fun and had an emotionally satisfying conclusion, but this feels more successful (to my sensibilities) as a creative statement. The ways that this could be seen as “a lot”/“too much” and whatnot feel additive, while that adventure has small details that I briefly stumble on (before then getting back into the ride). Though, they’re ultimately doing different enough things that, while the comparisons make sense and are inevitable, there’s also limitations to that.
