Well, movies are subjective things. I can’t fully dissect why I didn’t enjoy it TBH, but these things I called out didn’t necessarily work for me. I totally agree that some aspects of art aren’t meant to be understood and rather “felt” by the audience. But I didn’t enjoy these same things in Sinners. The vibe was off, or whatever you want to call it. I’m not on any high-horse about it so just let me not enjoy the movie lol.
My personal top five favorites of this year so far are this one, Sinners, Companion, Superman, and Eephus.
Seems to be classified as 2024 because of Cannes? But like, I don’t count that kinda thing for my personal purposes, lol. Became available outside of festivals in March of this year.
my top 5 so far is weapons, 28 years later, warfare, black bag and sinners like halfway through this and it will be in the top 5 if the second half lives up to the first. wanted to finish tonight but my little one has a bug
especially at @OotyPa youll love it I got your back if you want to attack Sinners in the Sinners thread
Lol we strike when they least expect it… imagining the possibilities and it is tempting but we need more recruits. maybe I need to further develop the Marvel blow to really hit em where it hurts
The flash-forward also did not work for me but overall I thought Sinners was great. Favorites for this year are Weapons, The Ugly Stepsister, Mission Impossible, 28 Years Later, and Killer of Killers (not in that order). This is likely top 10 but I don't think it's top five for me.
I think Midsommar is my favorite, then this, then the first hour of Beau, then Hereditary, then the end of Beau. All good though, very interesting director
I’ve enjoyed ruminating on this movie. I think it’s still too early to rank it in my mind. I’m still thinking about Beau too, honestly. I adored Hereditary and Midsommar but his most recent two are more difficult to pin down in a wonderfully fascinating way.
I have cooled on Beau in the past week that I watched it, but that first hour or so (and the animated sequence) might be Aster’s best work
The way the camera moves around Joaquin in the climactic scene is so cool. Need to think about this as a whole more, but I'm pretty sure I loved it.
