I like my Nolan movies to be mindfucks (Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar). I remember being disappointed when hearing he was doing the Batman trilogy because it'd take him away from that kind of storytelling/plot but at least he made those pretty dark and twisted, especially with The Dark Knight.

I'm not sure how he's going to put his stamp on a real-life war story.

I'm already pretty excited for this movie, but this trailer didn't do too much to build on that.

He's Christopher Nolan, let that determine your anticipation (or lack thereof), not a trailer.

funny how people use that logic for film and, like, no other forms of media

It's truth. Trailers are meaningless. Seconds of footage from throughout the film condensed, contextless, in an attempt to sell a product, say nothing about the actuality of the film. The closest counterpart is probably a single from an album, except even that doesn't work because it's more like if tiny segments from an entire album were all taken out and shoved together for a cohesive 30-90 second clip. Some awful movies have great trailers. Some great movies have horrible trailers. The people who make trailers manipulate tones to play to an archetype, an incredible disservice to the whole works. The trailers for Everybody Wants Some!! and Manchester by the Sea leaned on surface level aesthetics and conceptions about party movies or heart wrenching dramas, they don't attempt to sell the films for all the nuance an layers and beauty they contain.

Film is in the unique position of trying to convince people to go out to a theater, so I get it. They're selling a 1.5-2 hour form of art that, ideally, someone takes 3 or more hours from their day to devote to driving to a theater, buying a ticket, and sitting in a theater for. But, and I say it in a lot of film threads so I apologize if I come off repetitive, trailers do not matter at all.

A Burger King commercial isn't changing how I feel about Burger King. I have an idea of what to expect from Burger King based on my history with it. Same with a commercial for a movie.

i agree trailers do not matter. however, it seems directors get more leeway for trailers not being representative of their finished product's vision (and it typically gets brought up most for auteur-types like nolan) than executive producers get for television or musicians gets for their albums. just seems odd.

I dunno, if a TV promo says "from Shonda Rhimes" or a teaser has Mike Schur's name on it, I'd feel similarly. And how many times are singles released by established artists and people go "wonder if it'll be representative of the album" or "it's artist x, I'll still listen to the album". Is it that different across mediums?

I'm not even saying it specifically to give Nolan leeway. I love some of his stuff, think some of it misses its mark, but generally consider him worth seeing. I just generally want the weight given to trailers to be taken away, I've been anti-trailer in the Rogue One and Silence threads too. Not because I think they'll be better or worse than their trailers, just to try and continue to preach that they don't matter to whoever will listen. Many do not, and that's fair. I'm a doofus.

I liked the trailer, but it should have threw in a creepy, slowed-down piano version of Edwin Starr's "War." That would have been the ticket.

to mindfuckerize this? How about a the nazis were actually right all along narrative

every single one of his movies has a gotcha twist. Doesn't it? I'd kinda forgot. That's a limiting and (silly) signature

  17. People often knock Nolan for injecting big twists in his movies as a tired gimmick and a crutch. It'll be interesting to see how he does with a movie seemingly without the need for one.

Holla, just got an email from my IMAX theatre stating they'll be showing the prologue for "Dunkirk" film before my showing of Rogue One on Saturday, the only theatre in the state showing it! #winning

  23. Rated PG-13 for intense war experience and some language

Not too surprising, I guess. It's been forever since Nolan went R-rated.

For me it's surprising a war film is not rated R. TBH though, you can still have a ton of violence in PG13, you just can't show blood shooting out which isn't necessary.
