Those films are honestly incredible portraits of war - mostly off the battlefield. Much like you, I don't care to explore much of his work due to his remarks, but I can admit those are some damn fine films that portray parts of war other films don't touch (especially how the war affected the Japanese, as well).

Also never seen Fury. I will have to change that. Not sure why I never had much interest in it. I love Pitt and I love war films.

Another reason why i'm hyped for this is that for some reason my favorite WW2 films are ones that are not really Americentric, show a side of the war most Americans never hear about, and show courage in the face of horrible defeat like Letters from Iwo Jima, Das Boot, and Stalingrad (the 1993 one), and i've been wanting a modern portrayal of the British perspective on the frontlines of the war for a long time.

Letters From Iwo Joma is incredible. Definitely a must watch WW2 movie. I agree with others that this piques my interest due to the lesser known subject matter.

Letters from Iwo Jima is one of the more balanced World War II films in terms of humanizing the Japanese soldiers. It is pretty remarkable that you can get enough money to make a big-budget film almost entirely in Japanese and portraying the soldiers in a positive light.

Do we still honestly need new WWII movies in 2016?

    Sure.

I mean it was the most dramatic and climactic series of events in modern history that arguably changed the course of human civilization. It was such a large scale event in people and geography that really you could never run out of interesting and fascinating true stories to tell from it.

Now are there conflicts that are also worthy of being portrayed in media but have for years been largely ignored in favor of WW2? Absolutely. i've been wanting a modern take on the American side of the Korean War that is not M.A.S.H forever now. I am glad WW1 is finally starting to be portrayed in modern media a little bit even if it's a FPS game and a fantasy superhero movie.

I agree with everything you said. That being said, most of these films hit the same note over and over again. Just seems like most of these stories have been covered already.

On Netflix there is a 3 part British miniseries called "Our World War" that came out in 2014 that is really good. It's kind of like a British WW1 Band of Brothers.

    EDIT
Just checked and it's not on Netflix anymore, but you should still find a way to check it out.

I don't think the issue is that there are too many WWII movies, the problem is it's the same movie over and over, there's no diversity in storyline or perspective or casting, considering this movie apparently only has white dudes in this it will probably be the case again

modern hollywood war films might be the worst genre but they don't saturate the market as much as superhero films

World War II and the Holocaust are the sorts of topics that you need to justify with a perspective that people have not thought of before. Otherwise, it becomes an issue where you are just using it in place of building a strong story. Having Nazis as your antagonists fills in the blanks in the viewer's head for you, given that it is the one conflict most people can tell you a little bit about. Vietnam has been a much more interesting conflict to film because of the inherent ambiguity involved in the United States and the involvement in the country.

I just hate the current trend in Hollywood with contemporary set war films of "hey we don't want to be seen as glamorizing or misrepresenting the reality of war, but at the same time market the film to the Fox News watching conservative 50+ demographic by portraying the protagonist as an infallible white Christian American patriot like figure".

It's like most of these films like Hurt Locker, American Sniper, and Lone Survivor can't decide if their anti-war or jingoistic recruitment films. The want to have their cake and eat it too. For once i'd like an unabashed unapologetic modern anti-war film like they used to make.

No one is going to fund a movie like that and alienate a significant portion of the people who turn out for war films.

Yeah I guess. I think also it has to do with the Pentagon's PR arm having a powerful say in Hollywood, where if they don't agree with the message of the film then they don't supply the equipment and props you need to portray modern war accurately at a huge discount. They control the message, and then the filmmakers get the cool toys.

Movies like M.A.S.H, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Apocalypse Now were made without any assistance from the military, After those film's had huge success and spread a message the Pentagon didn't like, they cashed in on Top Gun and they've had control over the tone of modern Hollywood military films ever since.

Here is a really good article HuffPost did a few years ago about this topic

The question is, can you make a great war film with a strong anti-war message without military assistance like Kubrick, Stone, and Coppola did back in the day in the current Hollywood environment?

I remember loving Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War when I saw it, and I think it had a lot to do with how interesting the Korean War was from that perspective. The Thin Red Line is still my favorite war movie though, and its WWII, but it was created by an absolute master.

I saw this teaser when I went to Suicide Squad. I don't get the hype surrounding it; the "quiet to ear piecing noise to quiet" in trailers annoys the shit out of me. All this did was cause a shock to the system because it was so loud.

  25. I remember when the Inception trailer had that bwommm sound effect, and every blockbuster trailer after it followed suit, basically turning it into a joke.
