Let's talk about something we can all agree on, its really fun to say Dunkirk to the tune of Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem

If anyone is curious, this map shows which locations are true IMAX presentations and which ones are LIEMAX. It might need to be updated but there ya go.

    IMAX or LIEMAX?

I have to watch either this or Valerian for work tomorrow night. Not sure which yet.

Is seeing this in IMAX worth the extra $4.50? Never seen a movie in IMAX despite my theater having it for years

Nolan shot the film using IMAX cameras and actually knows how to take advantage of the format, so if any film is worth the extra money it's one of his.

Can someone help explain the difference between all the different types of IMAX presentations?

So, I'm seeing Dunkirk this Saturday in IMAX 70mm in Indianapolis, which as I understand is the "intended" presentation. However, I live in Columbus and it's being shown here in regular IMAX 2D (I'm driving to Indy to get the full 70mm experience).

Further, there are "LIEMAX" theaters that just borrow the IMAX name but aren't actually utilizing IMAX film/cameras?

I would just feel bad for someone who didn't know there were all these differences and they end up seeing what they think is the full experience when in fact it's some scaled-down or ripoff IMAX version.

Real IMAX is the big (almost square) screen, run on real film and not digitally projected.

LIEMAX is a bigger screen, better sound, and doesn't fully show off what was filmed with IMAX cameras. It's better than a regular theater, but certainly a bit manipulative of unknowing moviegoers to advertise it as IMAX.

It can be called IMAX 2D in either scenario.

I'm personally seeing Dunkirk in a LIEMAX, but that's because my nearest True IMAX is over three hours away.

Planned on seeing this tomorrow since it's $5 Thursdays, but I think I may go to the IMAX theater even though it's $18.

idk if it's like this in other areas, but the only "true" IMAX theaters around here are part of a museum/zoo, while the ones at commercial theaters are the not-quite IMAX.

Seems so far the biggest complaint is the lack of specific character backstory/development. My cousin saw it at an early screening yesterday and said that its amazingly well made. But that he didn't like the lack of specific characters to latch on to and care about with backstory etc, but he admitted that that just what he wants in a movie and understands that Christopher Nolan actively made the movie without that on purpose.

I can't wait to see it tomorrow night. Seems like it will end up overall being one of, if not his best reviewed film. Freaking Peter Travers went as far as to say it might be the best war movie ever.

That was the biggest complaint I've heard too. Which in a way I like and could be brilliant. It's hard to show the anonymity of war by honoring a traditional story structure. Though at no point should you say anything is the best ever before it's even come out haha. That's an absurd statement.

One of my buddies is the Entertainment Editor of a respected, midsized tri-county newspaper in my area and he's been writing reviews for 15+ years. He loved the film but did bring up how he has no idea how the masses will feel about it since there is no lead protagonist or a 'central hero' as he called it.

  17. I'm gonna trust audiences are smarter than people give them credit for.
Memento grossed over $34 million at the worldwide box-office despite initially being turned down by major distributors, because film executives felt that the movie was too smart for audiences.

The early reviews of Inception all praised its complexity and smart ideas, but warned it might be too smart for dumb moviegoers. Now some people are starting to wonder if it'll make back its reported $200 million budget.

I responded to him saying 'doesn't matter, people will flock to Nolan' and he said 'I'd like to think you're right. But people like the Transformers movies, so I just don't know.'

Inception then proceeded to gross almost $826 million, so... haha

Though it was also a DiCaprio fronted blockbuster that spelled a lot of the film out. Not that it isn't great. I just don't think it fits the bill of something that's "too smart for audiences." If anything it was exactly what audiences want.

Considering his reputation for providing studios with lines like this for advertisements, that is pretty standard.

  23. Yeah, I think audiences should be trusted more ... look how great Mad Max did, for example, when you trust the audience will get your vision. Too many studio dumb everything down (*cough* Marvel *cough*) and I'm glad there's still a place for a blockbuster like movie that's not what's expected.

Yeah I mean, American audiences do appear to be getting better. The new Transformers was essentially a box office bomb here, after all, which is encouraging.

Not saying I believe him, although I do like his reviews quite a bit. There have been a few similar comments made in other reviews though.
