Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan, July 21st 2017) Movie • Page 10

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by iCarly Rae Jepsen, Aug 4, 2016.

  1. Having Nolan films on 4K might be what tempts me the most to upgrade... eventually.

  2. Heh, I'm gonna love the shit out of this. I love that Nolan's just doing whatever the fuck he wants now. Blockbuster budget and people are saying it's almost a silent film. That's amazing.

Reminds me of people's reactions to Fury Road. This is shaping up to be his best movie.

Not to mention the fact that Nolan will get a bunch of Americans to see a WWII movie set BEFORE the US enters the war. That alone is a testament to his reputation here.

Who are these people who won't see a big-budget war film full of white people with very light English accents but would see it if it happened to star Americans?

Are you kidding? Dunkirk might not even get its big budget without someone like Nolan attached. Most Americans aren't interested in foreign films about foreign events. It's not about whether it STARS Americans. It's about the subject matter. Haven't you noticed that almost all WWII films are set during/after Pearl Harbor?

Obviously Nolan gets budgets he wants. That is a different issue than framing it as a "foreign film", when the trailer shows a lot of nice looking white people speaking in a very bland English accent. Most people probably won't even notice; it is not like he is making a movie about the Chinese or Japanese experience.

I guess you're looking at it like "of course a bunch of Americans will go see a war movie with white English-speaking people no matter what the subject matter". I'm not sure that's always been true. Is it easier for people to relate to movies about their culture? Absolutely. It would definitely be a tougher task to get Americans to watch a Japanese-centric war movie with subtitles. I think it would be just as difficult to get Americans to see a Russian-perspective war movie with subtitles though. Americans particularly love war movies with America as the hero/protagonist. That's my point. If you HAD to tell a pre-Pearl Harbor WWII war story that Americans would be willing to watch, you're right, it's most likely a British event with British characters, but I think it has to do more with the fact that there's no need for subtitles.

You are right, those movies would not get a particularly large budget or a large audience. Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima is a rare example.

However, people are not going to look at this as a particularly "British film" just like the average person does not look at Mad Max as an Australian film. No one considers the Nolan Batman movies foreign, even though the director, screenwriter, and most of the actors are either British or from somewhere outside of the United States. There are British films with a distinct British voice and outlook, but Christopher Nolan makes mainstream big-budget action films, which are distinctly American.

Again, I think it's about subject matter largely. This is clearly a British film. Mad Max isn't based on a real life war, so the comparison is not quite right. Americans love James Bond. It's not that they wouldn't see a spy/fantasy/action movie about a Brit. It's that WAR movies are almost always American-centered. Batman is an American character, created by an American and popularized in America. The fact that the particular screenplay writer and director is British is a footnote. I'm pretty sure Dunkirk will fit your criteria of having a "British voice and outlook". I mean, how could it NOT?

It doesn't have a British voice and outlook because it is being made by someone with an extremely American style. The James Bond films are largely similar.

Ok. I'm not very familiar with American vs British style. Maybe you're right. Would you say Kingsmen was more of a British style movie?

Bought my tickets to see it next Thursday at 6:00 PM.

Now, to secure a baby sitter. Or else my wife won't get to see it and I'm stuck seeing it by myself.

Now that I've seen enough comments saying Harry was good in his small role, it seems so genius of Nolan to use him. That added the tween demographic into the box office numbers.

Anybody seeing this in IMAX? Got my tickets for next Saturday, it looks like this will be one of the best utilizations of the format yet.

My local IMAX theatre doesn't have reserved seating, which is a requirement for me these days. I can't deal with A) showing up hours early or B) sitting up front for a premiere weekend showing. If the movie is as good as the tweets say, I might catch it again in IMAX towards the end of its run.

Even if it its not reserved seating you shouldn't have to show up hours early to get a good set of seats. Get there 15 minutes early and you beat the majority of the crowds at a theater.

I used to work at a one screen IMAX theater in a furniture store. For Nolan's Batman films, we had people lined up 2-4 hours early to get their pick of seats. Insane.

Yep, I think because this is a Nolan film (Even though it's not a superhero) it will be nuts.
