A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure

I saw the trailer to this with Black Panther and my two thoughts were "This looks really stupid" followed by "I definitely want to see this".

Feel like the plot twist at the end of this is that they are all a group of gamers playing the game

As long as it’s fun, I’m in.

Went to a Secret Screening last night and it was this. Had a good amount of humour, references and story that made it a really great watch. Went in not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised at the depth it had. I’d be excited for more in this.

The one bad review I've seen stated “Oh, great. Now there’s going to be a Dungeons and Dragons Cinematic Universe, isn’t there?” Not really judging the movie as much as he’s annoyed by the genre.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

this was solid enough, nothing great but it knew exactly what it was

actors were mostly charming enough, especially Pine who I think is one of the most likable actors in okay movies of his age. some decent imagery and effects, cribbed some of it hard from Lord of the Rings but that's appropriate enough for a dnd movie lol

Vox Machina show on Prime is still the best adaptation of this game to date, but this was okay too, I'd watch a sequel I guess

You don’t need to. I played it once and absorbed none of it. I’m sure there are a ton of references that went way over my head, but it had no effect on the movie.

Seeing this in a few days. Really glad Justice Smith seems to have fun in his role. Haven’t seen him in many projects after Detective Pikachu.

you don't need to know anything about d&d to enjoy this, all the stuff they can actually put in a movie is just races and class abilities which are all pretty standard fantasy movie stuff you'll pick up straight away

unfortunately the great thing about d&d, the communal experience of making the story together as you go, is functionally impossible to ever put in a movie. it's why even the better adaptations of the game, which this probably is, are always just gonna feel like fantasy movies

What if they put out a movie where the audience chooses what happens, like a choose your own adventure book?

that would probably be kinda like that Black Mirror episode that I really did not like

d&d isn't choose your own adventure, you don't get presented with a handful of options and go down a set path when you choose. d&d at its best is people creating a story out of nothing together, even if half of that story is making plans for hours which instantly fall apart the second they're put into motion. it's the only game I know of where the players can just do whatever they want, you can ignore the preset rules and just completely shape it into a new game if you see fit

I'm sorry for ranting lol but it's hard to explain to people that the basic nature of what makes d&d so great also makes it impossible to properly adapt. this movie is still fun, charming and a very comfy watch, it does the best it can

There was part of me that thought there was a chance it would go full “Lego Movie” and it turns out to be a bunch of kids playing D&D and we were seeing what they were playing out. I am so glad they didn’t do that.
