Now that they're able to do a full and proper marketing campaign for this, I feel like it will do really well
Just finished reading Dune Messiah, what a great ending. But I would like to see Denis tackle Children of Dune too because I’ve heard Messiah/Children of Dune are meant to be back to back like parts of a whole.
Wasn’t there a pretty significant Mad Men subplot where Ken (I think) was secretly publishing sci fi stories?
Finished the book last night! Generally enjoyed the story, but Herbert's clinical, almost scientific writing style was pretty stiff. Found it difficult to admire any of the characters by the time all was said and done, too. Still excited for the movie despite all that - expecting it to be great.
Yeah, I can't help but feel that Paul lacks a real hero's journey. His clairvoyance and political maneuvering carry the story, but neither come from strength of character. Similarly, his combat and Voice training are largely received prior to the start of the book, so we're deprived of watching his growth there too. I wonder if it really would have been so difficult to have him struggle with pride and overconfidence, humble him (perhaps through a personal failing contributing to his father's fate), then mature as a wise leader as the book progresses. Instead, we seem to watch a young man simply come to terms with his own grandeur and learn to wield it. Of course vengeance motivates the story in large part, but as someone who enjoyed the book moderately, I'm just thinking through what changes, even simple ones, might have strengthened the narrative and potentially made it a real classic.
