FINALLY got to see this tonight. Spontaneously went to a showing at 9:30 at night by myself and I was the only one in the theater so I was fully immersed. I had no knowledge of the source material at all but I feel like I fully understood everything, or at least everything that I needed to. Visually this is just incredible, and the performances and writing were really great too. The two and a half hours just FLEW by, I was shocked when it ended. Not in a bad way though, I was fully satisfied This really lived up to the wait for me. Right now I'm torn between trying to wait the two years to see what happens next or reading the book (or more likely a summary lol)
Isn't it just Oscar Isaac and Jason Mamoa? Still some heavy hitters in there, I don't remember anyone else dying I'm bummed that Isaac is dead though, especially so early into the movie. I loved his character and really wish he got more screentime, I was really interested in his story
I watched half of this on HBO Max and immediately purchased a ticket to see it in a cinema. I’m happy that Dennis gets to make a sequel after what happened with BR2049.
Them and Dr. Kynes. And I guess Piter but his role was much smaller in this compared to the book, he was probably only actually named once or twice
Yeah, it’s a fantastic film. It’s just a shame that it didn’t receive the box office reception it deserved.
Funny how in all the ads Mamoa says "Let's fight like demons", whereas in the film he actually says "They fight like demons", haha, #marketing
How does the Lynch version of this possibly get the entire book in one movie? I already felt like this one could have been longer than it was and it only covered the first half (from what I've been led to believe). Does he just truncate the shit out of it?
omg saw this in imax last night. HOLY SHIT. so epic, so loud (almost too loud), but it was so good. the imax machine malfunctioned like 20 mins in lol so we had a ~30 min break but the movie was so good. Also i love where they ended it. Part II is going to get wild SOOOOO fast. My favorite part in the book starts like right where it left off.
Weird how CHOAM isn't mentioned in the film, even though it's the largest source of wealth in the empire
Never read the books but my dad used to watch the Lynch movie repeatedly when I was a kid and I remember being very creeped out by it for some reason lol Watched this last night and it was amazing can’t wait for pt 2
@Garrett have you detailed your distaste towards the novel anywhere? would be curious to read as someone who just read it
I haven't really. A quick summary from what I remember/have recalled having this conversation since the movie came out: I found the writing to be really sub-par, dense (and not in a good way), and not very compelling. Had it not been a pillar of one of my favorite genres, I would've gladly tapped out and never finished it. And I don't think the plot itself was strong enough to make up for the bad writing. There's really not *that* much plot going on. It's extremely political... but it feels like most of the politics take place off-screen and we just live through Paul experiencing the after effects. Kinda covered in here before by a few people, but I don't particularly love the White Savior narrative that can easily be read into the plot (whether it comes from the "this is critiquing" it standpoint or it's outright acting it out) or the fact a male savior uses powers only specifically used by women up to this point. I thought the world building didn't really live up to snuff (for example, if this is our future, where did these Voice powers come from?). I know that the later series goes on to emphasize Paul as Destroyer and get weird and all that... but that's not what this first book is asking us to do at all. I think it was @ChaseTx who posted a good article in here just before the film came out that goes into this plot (and the eugenics of Paul) a bit more that I found very resonant. I quite like what Denis did to convey the story, and the visuals/graphics are top-notch. It's a beautiful film and very entertaining to watch. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it and I'm looking forward to the sequel. The novel is the opposite of that for me.
