I’m happy to wait. I know this is a different beast than most “sequels” because we just got part one of a single book’s story, but (without knowing the source material) I thought the arc and ending here was satisfying and made sense. Didn’t feel the abruptness others have talked about. So, if part two comes in a few years, that’ll be fine for me. Oh yeah, btw, this was very good. Don’t think it quite reached BR2049, but similarly compelling and visually impressive. Absurdly good cast. Main criticism I couldn’t shake was the messiness of a story this rooted in Middle Eastern culture having no significant presence of people actually from that culture; that was a worry I had beforehand and need to process more now that I’ve seen it. Between this and BR2049, wish Denis dealt more with culture-as-aesthetic. Otherwise, though, super cool sci-fi film.
Like, I got goosebumps again now listening to it; the music combines a level of monarchy and aristocracy to it, giving a sense of what was happening being very heroic and noble. 5:28 is when the bagpipes start "You can’t describe thousands of years of a powerful house in one song. Zimmer: “observe”"
Yep. Gonna watch it on Max later with my Dad. Totally understand people who preferred not to go to the theater, but Imax was just incredible for this.
My only real complaint is the ending. The duel just felt weird, and then Paul says “desert power” for some reason but doesn’t even throw up the Shaka and then it ends. I know it’s hard to end a story halfway through, but it felt very anti climactic.
From my perspective, as someone with almost no familiarity with the source material, it ended perfectly. The film opened with Paul having dreams of Zendaya, which persisted and grew throughout the film; it ended with him meeting her. He early on wasn’t “in the mood” to fight Brolin; the finale was ritual combat he volunteered for, ending in his first kill. The whole film revolved around the sand planet’s politics, etc., and ended with Paul formally joining up with the sand people.
Oscar Isaac is having a massive year. Dune, card counter, scenes from a marriage, Adams family. Obviously covid pushed things into this year but the man has been busy.
My wife is with her mom downtown for a girls night. I’m seeing this in a theater by myself for the first time in years. Sometimes solitude is peaceful, even if it’s with sandworms.
I don’t tell people I’m going to see a movie because I’m afraid they’ll ask to come with me. alone is the way
I'm not going to say he's not entitled to his opinions, but judging from the headlines of his No Time To Die and The Last Duel reviews, he seems like a guy inclined to not like things.
The only review you ever needed was in this thread all along. So happy you guys are enjoying this. Dune part 2 LFG!!!!
