I think Dua Lipa has entered "Too Big To Fail" pop territory. Even if this gets a slightly muted response, still do well in terms of streams, touring, etc. Also, these initial releases are being compared against a blockbuster release in 2020 when most people had NOTHING TO DO but stream songs, watch videos, etc.
Her Future Nostalgia singles run has shown that she's a big slow burner. I expect this album's singles to also take a long time to climb the charts again. It's already happening with Houdini.
This conversation got me to check out the Top 40 airplay chart where "Houdini" is currently number 8. Also...did not know that there are currently Thirty Seconds To Mars and Shinedown (?!?!) songs getting airplay on Top 40.
Yep, I saw Shinedown play an acoustic set at a small bar venue last summer, and it was sponsored by my local pop/variety station, which was incredibly funny.
Is everyone forgetting how long it took for New Rules and Don't Stop Now to catch on? Levitating didn't even chart until well into the album cycle, then dominated for months. Geez, the album hasn't even been announced yet, give it some time.
huh? what top ten are you talking about? the only charts I generally pay attention to for an artist in this position are Spotify Global Top 50 and the Hot 100. "Houdini" is in the 20s and falling on both
Mediabase airplay chart is another good source. Measures radio airplay (which, yes, I know has a dwindling influence these days).
Top 40, #8 Hot AC, #6 Word iTunes, #7 & #6 World AM, #7 Global Digital Ranking (all streaming platforms): #7
glad she's doing well on North American terrestrial radio in 2024. Justin Timberlake's "Selfish" must also be a hit by that metric.
next you guys are going to be telling me that her Spotify Monthly Listeners metric is an accurate reflection of how many fans she has.
I want to be very clear that her global ranking and the ubiquity of her music across streaming platforms =/= how well "Houdini" is doing as a single compared to expectations.
Yes, we are clear you're ignoring the actual numbers to pretend "Houdini" isn't doing very well worldwide and on radio and on streaming and has made millions of dollars on YouTube alone.
I think these songs are so damn good. Training Season > Houdini but both rock. Need that album announcement
I like both songs and am glad she’s out of the disco era because that’s being beaten to death by other pop artists. Really dig whatever she’s channeling in these songs, even if they’re not immediate like “Dance The Night.”
