I really really like how this album ends. The way “Happy For You” lifts off is a fulfillment of every promise about the album’s sound. Contender for best pop closer of the year so far alongside Maggie Rogers “Don’t Forget Me”.
I for one will enjoy a pop album without worrying about reading about the "discourse" surrounding it or needing context to understand "why" a certain song is good/not good. It shouldn't be that deep.
I’d give Dua the edge of those two, if only because she didn’t commit the cardinal sin of releasing the great closer as the first single.
Sorry, I'm just over the discourse surrounding Taylor's album, if this came out at a different time maybe I'd be more interested in diving deep to find out what certain songs are about, but at this place and time I'm glad a new pop album came out that I can enjoy without being perpetually online in order to "get it".
How did she only pull 60k for first week sales…that’s somehow almost 10k less than Justin Timberlake just did on his flop album.
Timberlake's album is also 18 songs long, to this album's 11. Taylor's was 31. Beyonce's was 27. This is a pretty good illustration of how big the "just put a bunch of extra songs on your album" bump can be for streaming numbers. And also also, this album has been out for three days, let's not count the first-week numbers yet.
She's pretty active on social media as far I can see. Feel like everyday I'm seeing her ass or some underboob/sideboob
Managed to give it two listens during the weekend and had strong reactions to most of it. It's also more lowkey and breezy than I expected, and in that sense I feel like it's meant to be played in the sun, with friends chilling on a patio or at a pool, whereas Future Nostalgia was more immediate, nighty and clubby, if that makes sense? While it's not a big departure, it's definitely a different vibe so I can't wait to spend more time with it through scenarios similar to those pictured and as the weather gets warmer (and finally sunnier godammnit)
Yeah I officially like this front to back. Training Season, These Walls, Whatcha Doing, and Maria are my favorites. If Anything For Love was a full song it'd probably be my favorite. EDIT: just got to Whatcha Doing and that song is so "Tame Impala feat. Dua Lipa", I love it so much.
Caring too much about artist’s music revealing parts of their personal lives is the absolute worst development of the 2020’s in music. I don’t fucking care who you’re dating or what you’re referencing in your songs, just write good songs! Not that it’s bad to write about your personal life, hell pianos become the teeth’s music is full of hyper specific reference only Kyle and his family would ever actually understand and I think he’s a magnificent writer. But when it comes to an artist like Taylor swift where she becomes so concerned with sly winks to her audience about who she’s talking about she forgets to write a good song or lyrics that actually mean something. Frankly I wish I knew less about everyone in the music industry. Dua Lipa not revealing much about herself in interviews or her music is not her problem. There are a million and one ways to write a good song, surface level retelling of universal emotions is one of them and that’s okay!
Sure, you may not care but you can’t deny that the general public does, and so do the stans. It would absolutely help Dua’s career if she got more personal the way Taylor, Olivia, Ariana, etc do. No one’s saying it makes better songs, just that it creates a ton of buzz and curiosity that gets more people caring.
I’m actually not convinced because the general public has been lapping up faceless anonymous pop music for decades
Top albums of 2024 Taylor 1989 - Harry Styles Morgan Wallen - no one 21 Savage - no one Toby Keith - no one Kanye and Ty Dolla - no one Twice - no one Ariana Grande - Spongebob Future and Metro - no one Beyonce - no one Taylor Poets - Matty, Joe, Travis
I’m not convinced it would help dua lipa’s career and she can and has been doing just fine in the lane she’s in
