I’ve been listening to these guys the past couple days and it’s been great digging into their work even more. Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and The Dirty South in particular have hit the spot. It’s interesting hearing them dive into southern American mythology which has always been fascinating to me in how gothic and idiosyncratic it is. think my favorite overall Truckers song is “Used To Be A Cop” though. That’s that good shit
Favorite non-Isbell DBT song is probably Where The Devil Don't Stay, but that's just right now it changes so much
honestly feel like Ibsell’s DBT stuff is a little overrated. i put his last three solo albums on the same tier as my fave DBT records but there are only two of his DBT songs that i care that much about
I understand that take, but I think I have to disagree. His six contributions to DD and TDS remain some of the best songs he's written in my book.
that might have been a bit strong, yeah. i just feel like cooley and pat are every bit just as good of songwriters as isbell, yet he kinda dominates the convo with the band
Oh now that is absolutely true. The band had three of the greatest 21st century American songwriters in it all at the same time but Isbell's success--while completely deserved and so encouraging--does mean that the uninitiated sometimes think of Cooley/Hood as "just guys" or whatever. But that's obviously wildly incorrect.
On the one hand I agree, but on the other hand it really feels like they've entered a new era of the band post-English Oceans
definitely wish there was more Cooley, but this is still pretty solid. middle of the pack of the post-Isbell albums. lots of Neil vibes here, especially on “Grievance Merchants.”
The new album is one of my favorite things released today and that's saying a lot. HUGE Isbell fan but I've never really done a deep dive on any of the DBT stuff. Where should I go next?
I’m really in love with Rosemary. Enjoy this album a lot overall, just not really a fan of 21st century.
I like the Truckers but I like Isbell a lot more. My favorite DBT songs are the Isbell songs. If you are like me, you definitely want to go seek out those tunes. I think there are maybe 10 or 11 total that Jason wrote and sang on. They all come from the 3 albums he played on plus the B-Sides album. You can probably figure out it pretty easily but I can list them if you need help
I can't stand how much I like "When it all goes down, Armageddon's back in town and you can't tell the rabbit from the hat"
I was finally able to listen to this record this morning. It's got some really great individual songs but overall I think it's probably one of their weakest albums unfortunately.
"Armageddon's Back In Town" is a wonderful approximation of mid-to-late 80s Replacements new album is good
