another line that reeeeally struck me off that album was on "Plastic Flowers On The Highway" when he says "Another traffic death in town, something new to cut around" which is a very dark but very clever line about having to cut around the plastic cross with a lawnmower since the character of the song is doing community service, but also referring to people in town having to cut around it and be redirected because it stopped traffic. like damn thats sad

 

"Plastic Flowers" is the catchiest song I know of with that kind of bone-crushing sorrow

Love how that and the Isbell song "TVA" written almost a decade later tell opposite sides of the same story

 

people really don’t give Cooley enough props for his songwriting. almost done with my run through of the discography. “somebody’s gotta mop up the A1, somebody’s gotta mop up the blood” is such a line

 

Their live album (“It’s Great to Be Alive”) is on Spotify, and it’s well worth listening to. I really need to catch them live at some point.

 

Friendly reminder that "Once They Banned Imagine" is one of the best songs anyone's written in the last ten years

 

Also that American Band is a masterpiece
