You know, you could cut like 10 minutes off this album if you trimmed the 15 seconds of silence at the beginning and end of each track
Also worth noting that Take Care, the album many are calling his magnum opus, is actually longer than this. So it's pretty clear that length isn't the issue as much as song quality What songs would you all think about trimming? I'd probably cut "Faithful," "Controlla" and either "Grammys" or "Hype." Maybe both, maybe neither, idk.
I like "Controlla" and the wordplay on "Hype". "Faithful" and "Grammys" are probably what I'd cut also. And then certain lines or moments on other songs. Like you mentioned, those stretches of silence at the beginning and ends of songs really drag the album down in my opinion.
Haven't listened to this enough to know what I would cut, but generally I just get bored about 2/3 of the way through. That's really as specific as I can be since usually it's just on in the background while I'm doing something else
That's unfortunate, the album's final third is actually its best imo. Everything from "Childs Play" forward bangs
All four of those would be keepers for me. You could talk me into taking out Controlla and inserting the popcaan version, though!
agree that first and last thirds are the best I'd say Take Care > NWtS = IYRTITL > Views of what I've heard enough to judge but I like all of them
Take Care > Nothing Was the Same > Views > Thank Me Later Views is growing on me with every listen though.
It's just so long and sort of middle-y. Its super chill and listening in the background doing work its great, but really concentrating on it, every song runs through and it feels very monotonous. I want 1 or 2 songs to just hit me, but I guess thats kind of not Drakes MO. I keep going back to it though, just skipping some songs.
Take Care > Views > NWtS> TML I like this quite a bit, sonically everything gels so well, I've never really come to Drake records for the lyrics so him dropping the ball in that arena doesn't bother me at all.
At least the first minute of Child's Play sounds like something from Camp by Childish Gambino. and that is not a compliment lol
I think my problem with this album is it's really long and not much of it is that good or engaging. I like it more than IYRT but I just find myself waiting for the few highlights to show up.
I got into Drake with Comeback Season and the So Far Gones and have always kind of preferred the upbeat stuff with a mix of the slow/chill stuff as a nice contrast. I didn't think the So Far Gone LP and Comeback Season would get topped, but Take Care and NWTS came pretty damn close. If You're Reading This was a great surprise and I think that is Drake's best album even though we call it a tape... And that I am biased towards the early stuff when he was just another artist on MySpace. I enjoyed most of the record he did with Future. There are some parts where I think the idea could be fleshed out a little more, but it's a cool project overall. My first impressions with Views is that it's good, but need more time with it. Hype is probably the song that hit me the most on my first two listens. Like I said, need more time to sit with it.
hype is the only one of these i find remotely disposable. ditch 9, pop style, still here, resequence it so it starts with weston road flows and ditch all the trash bars he drops on every single track...basically give the entire thing a massive overhaul if we want it to be better than "fine" overall. this includes the trash verses on "pop style" and "views" so it is unfortunately objectively incorrect JUSTICE FOR POPCAAN Correct, i think everyone more or less feels this way. ditch make me proud, and a couple others from the middle stretch and its much more cohesive (maybe even lord knows, despite how incredible that song is)
This has only been sitting better with me over time. A few tracks are already Drake favorites for me (With You, Too Good for sure, U With Me? and Feel No Ways are getting there).
my roommate told me that too good was his least favourite and i very much regret sending him a link to this now
Feel No Ways is so good. Also, my favorite part of the album is probably that last chorus on Controlla. The production on this whole thing is spectacular.
