Dragon Quest Series (official thread)

currently playing XI S and decided this series deserves its own thread. I haven’t played any of the other games but have a fair amount of them downloaded so I really want to continue exploring this series after I’m done with XI. I’m thinking of playing V next it doesn’t look too long compared to an entry like 7 or even 8 and I know it’s a favorite. The entire 4, 5, and 6 trilogy seems like a good choice

 

I’ve only played XI S, but I loved it. I didn’t like the 2-D style when I occasionally changed it from 3-D, just to see. So I don’t think I’d like the older ones.

 

I’ve heard the DS or 3DS ports of 4-7 are the definitive way to play those. 8 and 9 are full 3D games even in their original forms tho. I’ve heard 8 is potentially the best after XI:S as an entry point

 

Starting to hit some walls in act 2 as far as these bosses go. But going out and farming 1-2 more levels across the board almost always works.

 

Yeah, after a certain point I had to do a lot of grinding to progress

 

Auto battle options make grinding a breeze and it’s pretty satisfying with how powerful I’m getting just watching my party raze enemies without needing to lift a finger

 

Yall DQ Builders 2 has a free demo and no lie it is like 12 hours long. Just in case you ever want to give it a shot.

 

damn good idea on the thread. here's my series history:

DQ1: had it on GBC and bought it for Switch for like $2. Never did finish it, only got to the final dungeon.
DQ2: also on GBC, I think I got the boat and don't remember much after that. Game is hard as hell and widely regarded as the worst in the series.
DQ3: played and beat the GBC ROM a few years ago and it ruled, especially that plot twist. Regarded as one of the best, for good reason.
DQ4: played it on the DS so very long ago, probably didn't get 10 hours into it. Will go back to it someday as I have the ROM.
DQ5: same as above but I got much farther and enjoyed it way more. Never did finish it but I need to. Widely regarded as on of the best in the series. Also have the ROM.
DQ6: never played, but I have the DS ROM.
DQ7: have it on 3DS, popped it on and played a little but it was less than an hour. Apparently a huge time sink (though not as much as the original on PS1) so I'll get to it one day.
DQ8: never played, and all PS2 and 3DS copies are hella expensive. Will need to emulate it, this is the one I want to play the most.
DQ9: played and beat it on DS long ago. Put probably 40 hours into it and easily could have done more. Didn't do much item crafting, which was a huge part of the game.
DQ10: online games suck
DQ11: played a few years ago, just incredible. Would like to replay sometime.
DQ Monsters 1: played the GBC ROM sometime in the past few years, actually enjoyed the hell out of it. Save scummed a lot to abuse the breeding system lol. Got some crazy good monsters and did a lot of the post game dungeons.
DQM Joker: played and beat it on DS loooong ago. I remember really liking it and I had this badass monster that was like a rooster knight with a sword lol

anyways this franchise rules

havent played DQXI in a bit but I remember thinking I had reached the end like five times throughout the game

 

I looked up the chapters of the walkthrough and I’m definitely toward the end of “game” but I know the post game is basically just act 3

 

Rolled credits. God damn. Ready for the post game

 

Got a little bit into act 3 in the post game but gonna be a while as I want to move onto new things. Gonna get an emulated run of DQV going too.
