Wait so people who followed along at the time would have gone through the whole Cell saga without knowing what adult future Gohan looked like? I had somehow never even considered that before
Yeah. The history of trunks special didn’t air until the cell saga was almost over in the anime. Not sure when the manga released, but it had to have been a bit before
Really wish you guys didn’t bring up the History of Trunks special. It means I’m going to have to cancel my morning plans to watch it for the 250th time.
I just finished the Piccolo Jr arc for the first time. Honestly, the King Piccolo/Piccolo Jr saga is better than any DBZ saga imo. Great stuff.
Same. I had watched all the way up to the Piccolo arc years ago but it was the summer before college and I just never finished it. Glad I did! Its great. I do think the Red Ribbon Saga was a little too drawn out, though. It reaally drags when Goku gets to Jingle Village. Takes way too long getting up that tower. But, Suno and Eighter are great.
As someone who saw DBZ first, I gotta say nothing touches the Androids/Cell saga. Having watched DB for the first time last year, I’d say the tournament seasons 2/4/6 are by far the stronger seasons. 3 is probably my least favorite as it’s very overly long and the action isn’t as interesting with so many guns involved. I’d probably put some of the tournaments over Buu saga. Saiyan through Cell is likely above all of DB for me. Obviously, not counting Garlic Jr in that.
Haha I always forget Garlic Jr existed because I just watch Kai when I rewatch things. Cell Arc is great for sure. Tbh, the Cell and Buu arcs are my favorite in all of DBZ. I know people didn't love the Buu Saga (it is pretty long, Gotenks is annoying, etc.), but it's so much fun.
I mean if you enjoy more of the goofy stuff, you’d probably prefer DB. If you prefer more involved storytelling through fights, then you’d probably prefer DBZ. If you like Goku being super stupid, you’d prefer DBS. The over arching story of the rise of Gohan is what makes Saiyan through Cell so good as a whole. His arc is incredible. Buu loses major points from me for setting up Gohan as the main character, only to be given a power up and then thrown aside almost immediately. Videl becomes non existent due to it, too. Just not a fan of that shift. He is basically sidelined entirely until the universal tournament of power.
Oh I agree with that about Gohan. I've always hated how wasted he ended up being after getting his power unlocked by the elder Supreme Kai. And I can't stand what DBS did to him and Videl. ... I did love all of the Great Saiyaman stuff with Gohan though, up through the tournament before the Buu stuff kicks off
Yea, I liked the Saiyaman stuff, too. Gohan teaching Videl and Goten how to fly and all that. Some cool stuff.
I see DB as having more adventure, better fights/tournaments (srs feels like some classic Shaw Brothers films as times), and drier humor. DBZ has more character development and expansive lore (although I do kinda like how Goku was just this weird strong kid in DB). This might be unpopular, but I dislike any SSJ forms after the first. SSJ2 and beyond feel more like plot devices than meaningful transformations. The Android and Cell Games sagas (including Great Saiyaman) are phenomenal, but they also feel the most like Dragon Ball due to the RR coming back and Cell having strong DB villain aura. Namek/Frieza saga is my least favorite. I don’t care too much about DB when it gets too spacey.
I don’t mind the different forms but I’ve always kinda hated the numbers thing. Just feels like the word “super” is what should change. I liked prior to the Cell Games when everyone was trying to achieve “Ascended Saiyan” or whatever and wish they had stuck with that for Super Saiyan 2
I like the jump from SSJ to Ultra Instinct in Super. Not only is it a culmination of Goku’s mental and physical abilities, but it (sorta) comes from Roshi, and feels like a “full circle” moment instead of like 3,4, red, blue.
I like Z because it’s overall a more mature story and tone. DB is good though. Better than GT and Super. I still think the saiyan to cell arcs are the best written material in the entire dragon ball series. Goku learning about the saiyans, Nappa killing off the secondary z fighters, traveling to Namek, learning about Frieza enslaving the saiyans, becoming a super saiyan, to the arrival of Trunks, to the androids and finishing with the cell games. Peak dragon ball.
I agree with all of that. Though I would also say that those arcs were the height of my fandom back in the day (Cell arc being the peak) so maybe I’m biased because of that. Ha.
Finally watched Daima. Really fun but Christ it makes my brain hurt for canon. I really hope we finally get the continuation of Super with this level of animation.
I’m reading through the Moro saga for the first time. I listened to podcasts about it back in 2019 so I had some idea, but damn, this Moro guy is diabolical af Props to Vegeta for saving the kid
I've decided to re watch DBZ for the first time in years. I usually just watch Kai. Let's see if my attention span holds during all the filler or if I give up lol. It is so refreshing to have Gohan's old VA back. Totally hated his voice in the Kai dub. Love that it's the same voice as kid Goku right after finishing my watch of that.
I don’t see the appeal of Kai. Maybe cause I grew up on DBZ and its length just is what it is for me.
For me, mainly because my ADHD worsened with age, there are other shows I want to watch, and because I don't have as much free time on my hands haha
