Yeah it is really inconsistent, especially Vegeta. One of the things that I think a lot about with this show is how often the characters seem to forget vital information. When Goku uses instant transmission to get Cell off Earth before he blows up, the characters mourn him. However, for all they know, they are going to wish him back in about fifteen minutes. The only time it really made sense to mourn death was the brief period where they thought people couldn't be revived due to stuff like Piccolo dying or the one-death-revival rule that used to exist.
Mourning Vegeta (the few that really did) after his sacrifice made sense. According to Piccolo, there would be no coming back. Vegeta’s soul would be recycled for another life.
Is that what Piccolo meant by that? I thought he just meant that Vegeta wouldn’t get to have an “afterlife” like Goku did, not that he couldn’t come back
Vegeta was told that his body would be gone and his soul recycled, which sounds far more permanent than Goku. At least with Goku there was some hope (Namekian dragon balls). Not sure if Porunga could bring back a soul that has been recycled for another life.
Honestly insane how quickly everyone forgave Vegeta for murdering all of those innocent people in the Buu saga just because he wanted a power boost to beat Goku in a fight How did it not hurt his Saiyan pride to just find a shortcut to being more powerful rather than training for that strength?
Anyways, currently in my first rewatch of OG Dragonball since high school and I'm loving every bit of it. Found a color corrected DBOX version and it looks great. At the world martial arts tournament that had Tien and Chiaotzu for the first time. Man, I forgot how much of an evil dick Tien was at first
But that doesn't make sense either because when Vegeta died on Namek he was able to come back. Also, when Piccolo died against the Saiyans he was still pretty much on the evil side. The truth is it was never really consistent.
Can we just talk about how Goku tried to pimp out Bulma and Videl to the Elder Kai in front of both of their partners lol
You’re right and I have no idea why his soul would be recycled after his death in the Buu saga but not earlier. Toriyama probably just used the idea to add weight to Vegeta’s decision. I just thought that, since Piccolo believed in what Vegeta’s fate was after he died fighting Buu, the others probably would have believed it too. That should have been a serious cause for mourning. At least for Bulma and Trunks. Maybe Yamcha would be happy lol “the truth is never really consistent” could be a tagline for Dragon Ball as a whole
The only reason Piccolo brought it up is because he explained to Vegeta it would be his second death and the dragonballs wouldn’t be able to bring him back. So he’d be forced to stay in the afterlife where he wouldn’t have a body. But then king yemma kept his body for him just in case because of Buu.
Hm. I could swear it was Porunga who brought him back on Namek to begin with, I thought Shenron’s “one time” rule only applied to wishes granted by Shenron (otherwise Krillin would not have been able to be brought back after Frieza) But yes the real answer is that searching for consistency in Dragonball is a foolish effort lol
Doesn't every planet have its own other world? Vegeta didn't die on Earth during the Frieza arc. Maybe other world is different for that planet
Hmm. That wasn't in Kai though, which makes me think it wasn't in the manga either, so sounds more like filler. But yeah maybe you're right. Man, dragon Ball is a mess haha
I think you have it backwards. Vegeta = Shenron, Krillin = Porunga. Shenron was summoned on Earth. They made the wish to revive everyone killed by Frieza on Namek. This included Vegeta and the Grand Elder, so Porunga was revived by Shenron at this same time Vegeta was wished back. Then Porunga transports everyone from Namek to Earth. Krillin is not revived during this wish since it was made via Shenron and he had already been wished back once. After the fight with Frieza, the Namekians use Porunga (on Earth) to revive Krillin and Chiaotzu since they couldn't use Shenron. As far as the inconsistency in the Buu saga - I think it is the whole "he's a bad guy so he won't have a body/soul anymore" thing (so not even Porunga could help). This is more consistent in the manga. The anime has those filler episodes where all of the bad guys clearly still have their bodies, so it adds to the confusion here. That wasn't Toriyama's idea and it created an inconsistency/plot hole later on. Of course now in Super or DAIMA, if that ever happens, they can call up Whis and have him undo basically anything or their god/demon friends can collect the Super Dragon Balls or Demon Realm Dragon Balls lol.
haha even though it's convoluted, I really enjoyed it back in the day. All of the rules and circumstances made it a little more tense and stressful. I think they just got tired of writing around all of that and made all of the Dragon Balls basically have unlimited power for the sake of ease. Shenron has had so many power ups, wishes added, etc. that I can't even keep them straight anymore.
We all have to remember this was written by someone who forgot about a specific character and that’s why the specific character never showed up again lol
Yeah I was talking about Launch, but I’m sure we could find a handful of others that randomly disappear
I was today years old when I realized that by having Gohan injure his arm fighting Cell and not being able to use it, it mirrored future Gohan also having to fight with one arm. Different issues with their arms, of course. But that had to be intentional and I never thought about it before.
I definitely think they mirrored each other, but Future Gohan mirrored teen Gohan. I’m pretty sure the manga chapter when that happened came out before the history of trunks special
I believe at some point in Z, Dende straight up says like “oh yeah nearly all the rules about the dragon balls are totally discretionary and I can make the new ones have none of them, no biggie” lol
