Yeah from a story telling standpoint GT was just rushed so much. Super 17 arc is like 7 episodes. There was barely any time for development. That being said, SS4, Super 17 and Omega Shenron all looked pretty cool.

Also A Hero’s Legacy is a top 5 dragon ball film.

Perfect timing! I've been binging through DBZ for the first time (I've seen it all multiple times but this is my first binge of the series) so I'm in a Dragon Ball mood right now.

I forgot how much I loved this show. The stakes just feel so much more real compared to Super. The power scaling of Z got pretty ridiculous, so I get it, but Super just doesn't have the same level of consistency to it. The characters' "power levels" just fluctuate so much it's hard to tell where they're at, whereas Z clearly shows how different characters stack up. It makes the villains feel so much scarier because Gohan, Krillin, etc. can't even get within close proximity to Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, Recoome, Frieza, etc. without being in immediate danger. Super just decides on a whim that any random character will be on par with SSB Goku if they need them to be. haha.

Agreed. And I think opening up more and more ideas that he's some sort of "hero" kind of cheapens Goku's story. It was more special whenever he was the outlier of the Saiyans IMO.

 

Bardock and Granolah are lovers. Calling it now.

 

That's much less fanfic territory than Dragon Ball Heroes.

Golden Oozaru Future Trunks fuses with SS4 Broly who then uses the potaras with SS5 Blue Ultra Instinct Vegito who then uses Kaioken x500 Spirit Bomb-Big Bang-Kamehameha to beat Frieza absorbed-Perfect Cell-absorbed Majin Buu who is controlled by Zamasu and Omega Shenron.

It sounds like what I would have written when I was like 8.

 

lol I was exaggerating but it's not that far off. They do a live stream of it on YouTube all the time and every time I pop in, I'm super lost.

"SSBE Gogeta vs. SS3R Goku Black" hahaha.

 

Heroes is essentially fan fiction, though. Super is written by Toriyama.

Toriyama did turn Bardock into more of a good guy in the Broly movie, though, so this is kind of consistent with that.

 

I obviously realize that, but I was comparing Heroes to the idea of "shipping" Bardock and Granolah, not the idea of writing Bardock into the plot lol.

They already softened him in Dragon Ball Minus (Prequel one-shot back in the 2014) and the Broly movie. I think an interesting way of characterizing Bardock would be Cereal is his turning point from being a cog in Frieza's army to finally growing a conscience.

 

Is there any good place to watch the DBZ movies? I have a Funimation sub, but the movies aren't on there for streaming, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure I own all of them, but they're on VHS lol.

 

I have mkvs of all of them, but I am going to be out of town for a while. If you still need them in like 2 weeks, I can help.

 

On the Androids/Cell saga portion of my DBZ rewatch... Man does this arc drag on. It feels like the whole thing should be reaching its climax around the time he becomes perfect, but then the idea of the Cell Games just prolongs the whole thing by like 30 episodes. It also feels redundant because several characters repeatedly let him live: Vegeta makes the same mistake twice in one saga, Trunks doesn't think to kill 18 to keep Cell from absorbing her, Krillin doesn't think to deactivate 18 then wish her back afterward, Gohan goes from not wanting to fight to being sadistic and wanting to torture Cell.

I also don't really care for the ending. Goku has plenty of time to escape once he takes Cell to King Kai's planet, but he just...doesn't. Then Cell still manages to not only survive his own self-destruction, but he also regains his perfect form and learns Instant Transmission.... It just feels cheap. The energy blast battle at the end is cool, but like, Cell has already survived a self-destruction and being blown to bits multiple times, so the stakes are a little funky. So ending him with a bigger energy blast feels underwhelming to me.

 

Made it to Majin Buu. I love this arc at the beginning.

One thing always puzzled me though. Vegeta and Piccolo think that Gohan is dead, they tell Goku... Everyone else makes a wish to bring everyone back to life, but neither Goku or Piccolo ever think "Wait, why didn't Gohan come back to life? Why can't we still sense his energy anywhere?" They even break the news of this after Bulma, Chi-Chi, etc. return to the lookout and not one person ever wonders about this.

Since we know Pan is going to have a sizable part in this, I'm going to make the prediction that the whole movie is framed as a story she's being told. The new superhero characters are just Piccolo and Goku.

 

After all these years, I'm still not able to wrap my head around Buu's transformations and why he doesn't revert to the Evil Grey Buu once the Fat Buu is removed by Vegeta. haha.

 

Also how is Kid Buu the strongest Buu. That doesn’t make any sense. What’s the point of absorbing people if not to obtain their additional power

not to mention how obviously lazy it was to have a villain with literally the exact same power as Cell
