also took at shot at Patton Oswalt for the crime of *checks notes* liking Watchmen and The Force Awakens
I guess I'm just used to kolaches/sausage rolls being available at every corner donut shop around here. They're for sure good, but I've never thought of Shipley's as being anything particularly special/different than all the others.
absolutely. it's totally valid when done in goo faith and often leads to improvements in art. it is basically impossible to tell when, if ever, jack gets into these arguments in good faith anymore
fair enough haha. i don't there is much of anything wrong with the clip of hodgman, other than it being on lovett or leave it more generally lol
I think he is, most of the time, coming from a place of good faith. Hodgman isn't a bad guy and apparently the quote was taken out of context, but I do think that Disney does not need to be defended at all. I get where John is coming from re: randos jumping into people's replies just to shit on them, but the overall idea of let people like something is pretty silly. Criticism is good
the quote was less defending disney and more not shitting on people for liking a disney product, but yes, criticism is good.
Of course criticism is good but the dude is literally attempting to dunk on Patton for...just...liking things Jack doesn’t like? Sorry, I don’t get it or the impulse that drives someone to do it!
Criticism is good but specifically calling out other people for liking whatever you’re criticizing just makes you an asshole
It’s one thing to criticize something like a movie or whatever but “let people like what they like” is more speaking to people (like Jack, apparently) who go beyond just criticizing the work and have to try and make the people who like the thing feel bad about themselves for liking it. like truly what is the point of this: Criticize the show and the movie all you want but let Patton like what he likes
i feel like that post is pretty in line with most of his "engagements" over critiquing stuff but i could be wrong
I mean his point is that a ton of people are now shitting on TFA so he’s pointing out how quickly Patton was to heap praise on that vs how was he was to heap praise on Watchmen. I don’t find it all that nefarious, I also don’t really find it to be a good point either. Mostly because I don’t care about Star Wars and didn’t watch Watchmen yet
I think his point is just “look, he liked The Force Awakens four years ago and now he likes Watchmen, looks like he still can’t help but gush over bad movies/shows”
He’s absolutely done a net good compared to his occasional straightup asshole behavior on Twitter. The fact that he has so many shitty, shady people in the industry mad at him proves that
Jack is great. I can’t imagine caring what comedians think about Star Wars or Watchmen. But otherwise he’s great.
He does do good things but assholes do good things all the time lol he’s still being an asshole for no reason in this case
I remember him saying on Doughboys that if you don’t like him, don’t follow him. Which is advice I follow because I think he’s fine on the show and absolutely insufferable in almost every other regard.
