It feels like there was a good movie in here somewhere. There are interesting ideas, but it's very weirdly paced. It jumps into the premise a little too quickly and then spends all this time putting us in Alice's head, but by the time the twist comes around, there's not enough time for it to feel earned. I kept thinking of Truman Show and Pleasantville during this. It's been a while since I watched either, but I recall both spending more time allowing us to live in the world before the cracks start to show, making it all the more intriguing when things fall apart.

Style's performance drags things down too. Pugh is our normal character playing it straight while everyone around feels very heightened. That works and creates an eerie atmosphere, but then Style's is just kind of there, reading lines. Again, I'm thinking of the wife in Truman Show stumbling through ad reads even as it's becoming clear Truman is figuring things out. Some of his choices made a little more sense after the twist, but there wasn't much going on with him.

I didn't hate it though. It's still worth a watch for Pugh's performance. And Pine's. He gave a stellar performance for a character that really amounts to nothing. What was his motivation for egging Alice on at the dinner party? I don't know if it was just poorly edited, but the way his character ends up dying felt like a weird sequel setup.

Look, I spend a lot of time in the politics thread and I know of Peterson, but I refuse to learn more about this guy lol. My life is worse off for knowing who Ben Shapiro is, I won’t make that same mistake twice.

This was like a very very bad black mirror episode. Pugh and Pine couldn’t even save it. Stop giving Styles movie roles.

  10. That was fast. Didn't they only have enough money to release three movies theatrically this year? Are movies just going to streaming more quickly in general?

I think it’s just faster in general for movies to go to streaming. Top Gun Maverick is an exception. Most seem to do like 45-90 days from release.

Yeah, I think it depends on who’s producing and how much legs the movie has. Traditional producers/directors like Christopher Nolan and Tom Cruise will fight tooth and nail for it to hit streaming as late as it can. I’m sure the studio just wants to put Don’t Worry Darling behind them.

I didn’t think this was nearly as polarizing as all the reactions led me to think it’d be. Pretty mixed bag for me. Looked great, loved the production design. Florence Pugh was amazing. The score was awful. Thought the last 15-20 minutes were great. Felt like it was 84 years long. There’s definitely a great movie in there but I’m not sure how to get to it. Thought the directing was solid as well.

Give hair and makeup an Oscar for making Harry Styles look entirely unattractive

  14. Might rewatch this now that I can turn do so with subtitles. Maybe, idk. I thought this was fine, but that's the thing, I wanted it to be good but it was just okay. I don't mind that it's basically an extended episode of Black Mirror, but it held onto that reveal for way too long, the mystery loses its suspense. Obviously Florence is fantastic, but Harry is pretty bad and everyone else is kind of just phoning it in.

I really liked it. I mean, I am lost as to why this wasn’t received well.

Isn’t that the point of Styles character? That is literally what he is supposed to be doing lol

I think that Kroll and Pine’s roles should have been reversed.

He's supposed to be giving a completely middle-of-the-road performance? I don't think he was all bad, but I don't think "just kind of there" was really what his character should have been.

I think he did enough to make the role what it needed to be. The third act scenes had some flair.

I’m still surprised that I enjoyed the film as much as I did. I strongly disliked Booksmart and questioned OW as a director. But this is an above average showing. Sure there are flaws and many aspects could have been better. Styles wasn’t the big issue for me.

This was a mess. Too long, very weirdly paced, and the acting outside of Pugh and Pine was rough. The last 30 minutes or so was really bad.

I was entertained. Wasn't sure where it was going for most of it and I don't think the ending landed, like at all, but Pugh/atmosphere/setting made it all watchable. I knew nothing of the movie going in so.

  23. Gotta catch up with this thread, but I thought this was pretty solid UNTIL the twist, which absolutely shit the bed for me

  24. I thought this was not great, mostly an overstuffed Black Mirror episode with a really long second act. I think there's a better version of this where the reveal is at the end of the first act when she first climbs the mountain to the Victory building, then some time is spent examining the characters in the real world.

I think the twist could have easily been stronger. For instance if she had some kind of accident and couldn’t walk or something of that nature and Styles’ characters motive was more than just a purely selfish play. Maybe she still felt the urge to have control and it’s more compelling. It could have even been something on his end more than just being a proposed deadbeat in the real world. There wasn’t enough challenge to the viewer with the twist. The kids bit with Wilde’s character was low hanging fruit.
