after a little under a half hour of this, it feels like everything so far should be landing like two-thirds harder than it is. man...
This was not great but also enjoyable enough at the same time? It was bad to the point it was...decent? I'm probably giving it too much credit. Ariana's role was bad, I hate how they portrayed her as a mean ditzy popstar. I feel like Leo is above movies like this. Same with Meryl.
i was ready to say leo's performance isn't terrible at all before i got to where i got. probably not the best close-up for that type of dialogue either, adam
ok so when was the last time a film about the actual end of the actual planet been this uninterestingly average
almost every time lol I just finished it, I stand by what I said. Solid movie, no one will remember this in a week or so, but fun while it lasted. That said I hope a lot of "my arrow points up *and* down people" see this.
not almost EVERY time, one of those times was one of the funniest movies of the 2010s (give or take a really strange rape joke) and that also had jonah hill in it
I stand by my thoughts thinking this was so-so, but when we’re back in another round of the pandemic and surrounded by people who deny it’s happening (even though, as I understand it, it’s more of a climate change analogy - which obviously has its own deniers) and after four years of Trump and another possible four years of him - the satire has to be more clever than “We’re all stupid and we’re all gonna die.” Besides the running joke about charging for snacks, there’s not much I found that funny. It’s especially depressing knowing how good this cast is.
Have not read this thread yet and I'm only halfway through but I just wanted to say that Jonah Hill made me laugh out loud with "Yeah we're all dying to hear what you have to say"
"Molly kicking in...I timed that shit perfect" I guess I'm only halfway through (and now caught up on the thread aside from some spoilery posts) but I'm definitely enjoying this
Yeah, so I seem to be in the minority, but I thought this was quite good. Overlong for sure, but funny when it needed to be, rather effective, and an improvement on Vice. Actually made me feel like McKay not only had a vision this time, but mostly knew what he was doing. Good stuff.
The main problem with this movie is that I feel like it thinks it's smart but it's really not. None of the points it makes are particularly insightful and due to the lack of subtlety it will just end up preaching to the choir, mostly watched by a crowd who's used to more highbrow entertainment. I also think that it's stuck in a weird limbo of not being funny enough to be a comedy and not being serious enough to be tense.Again, enjoyable watch, but largely forgettable and kinda meandering. Leo was great, but Meryl Streep and Mark Rylance were grating.
It’s pretty much almost every time. I also hated Seeking a Friend for the End of the World when it came out.
not being funny enough to be a comedy and not being as smart as it thinks it is would be a pretty good description of most films in mckay’s career post-ferrell split
This was just okay. Parts of it were good or funny but so much of this just felt so smug and self-righteous, like bad lib Twitter political takes. It also was way too long for a comedy.
This is about where I'm at with this. It is a mostly poorly executed film that finds itself more clever than it actually is, but I still enjoyed it. Timothee Chalamet asking "Do you game?!" was my favorite thing he did this year though.
Yeah, I definitely think that's a valid criticism. It's not as smart as it thinks. I just found it to be enjoyable and thought it made the right choices more often than not. Also didn't read as neolib to me as I was worrying it might
Thought this was pretty…yikes when taken as the smart, incisive and urgent satire that McKay clearly intends it to be…but also pretty entertaining through and through. When the cast is that good it makes up for a lot. Chalamet asking “Can I be vulnerable in your car” and giving Leo’s wife his Twitch handle was the highlight for me.
I actually did like this quite a bit. After everything I've heard/read I was expecting to be absolutely beat over the head with the message for the entire movie, and while that was certainly there a bit, I really found that it only really did it at the appropriate times for the most part. I really liked both Leo and Lawrence in this, Jonah was funny as usual, and Cate Blanchett was in it way more than I thought she would be Solid like B for me
I am six minutes and 17 seconds in and the film is proudly boasting just how condescending and bloviating it is going to be.
