I don't really have a problem with the guy's politics at all. His satire is pretty accurate, just doesn't really make for funny scripts anymore. I think he needs to find his voice again and go full drama, idk.
i think the Lakers miniseries coming to HBO seems, at least on paper, to be a good lane for him, if he won't go back to anchorman/step brothers type stuff
I'm all for him changing as an artist if he feels inspired but he's definitely disappeared up his own ass as he's gotten more acclaim. Pretty bummed to see him seemingly kind of dismissing the validity of his old work since he'll almost definitely never top Step Brothers
I don’t know. “Joker” comes to mind when it comes to how people tried to frame it as “a real look at mental illness.”
joker wasn't so much stupid as it was boring and dull. this is a not particularly good Weekend Update bit stretched out to two and a half hours
it was bad. i said as much. it gave me a reason to support my local indie theater instead of regal/amc
I thought it was as stupid as it was dull, but will likely be remembered long after this is forgotten in three months. Either way, agree with you on that second part. Structure a one-hour sketch show around the premise of this plot and you might have something.
I enjoyed this. It's very on the nose with its delivery, and even still the satire presented sadly feels less biting when compared to a good amount of the shit we see on the news everyday. There's certainly some fat that could be trimmed too. But still an overall positive experience. Leo is fun in this. Most of the character references worked well. Particularly Rylance as every tech billionaire and Jonah Hill as an amalgamation of the Trump children. Trump would definitely leave his kids behind and it would somehow still blindside those little cretins I'm glad McKay (mostly) cut out the "stop to explain every complicated concept" gimmick. It worked for Big Short, was unbearable in Vice.
This was a bummer to read. While I enjoyed this, the desire to feel more 'real world' holds it back. It would be 10x better if it had leaned in more to the ridiculousness of Anchorman, Stepbrother, or The Other Guys. It could have used some of Ferrell's brand of humor.
Just finished this. Think the hate is overblown. Not an incredible movie by any means, but totally fine. A little too long. Got a good kick out of its portrayal of the American leadership among other things. Probably won’t ever watch it again, but glad I saw it. There’s two post credits scenes that gave me a laugh.
I don’t think I’d have enjoyed this as much in the theatre, but for an afternoon watch while bored on the couch, I had a good time with it.
This entire movie i was wondering "who is playing this parody of Ariana Grande because they're doing a great job" and then i saw in the credits it was actually Ariana Grande. Weird. Also this is like one of the least subtle movies i've seen in years. I agree with the politics of it but goddamn is it heavy handed.
This just makes me want to watch a satire that's better than this but got underlooked, like Men Who Stare At Goats.
there are near countless versions of this movie that are so much better. leo tries so hard for his version of the network speech. it’s some of the worst acting of his career.
