At the very least, this will give the Doughboys some good fodder, considering this comes from one of their former bosses who famously underpaid his staff.
“You’re going to be eaten by a Bronteroc. We don’t know what that means.” ok this movie has some legit great one liners
I’m torn on this movie. At some parts I thought it wanted to be a serious drama, with the relationships and monologues. But some jokes and outrageous moments showed it wanted to be a comedy, but it didn’t really land. It was way too long and lol actually had two post credit scenes. It’s nowhere near Dr. Strangelove as a tweet claimed, but I thought it was good commentary, even if too on-the-nose. McKay tried too hard to drill in the point of the movie and didn’t focus on making a good movie itself.
This is not very funny at all but the central metaphor resonates so strongly I couldn’t help but come around to it. Better than Vice but still wish McKay would go back to straight up comedies.
I just gave this a second watch. I honestly loved it. Forget the "comedy" aspect, I loved the way the movie was edited/made. It flowed. The commentary felt quite insightful. All the actors on board are all stars. Really disagree with the reviews here. My favorite part was when the comet is clearly in the sky and Leo is telling everyone to look up...and it blows up as a hashtag (still not being fully taken seriously). Probably one of my favorite "real" movies in quite some time
That was actually one of the satirical elements that worked for me because (whether intentional or not) it's an example of people caring more about a meme then an actual message (like, kony 2012 and harambe shit)
Iirc he was already irrelevant/had little power by the time the film was released? Remember how the charity that made it was the charity that always teamed up with scene bands?
That’s such a wild thing to think of now. That just out of the blue we were going crazy for capturing Kony. Then that whole organization fell apart.
The dude who popularized it got arrested for whacking off in public, if I’m not mistaken edit: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/n...rbation-public-invisible-children-301236/amp/
Exactly. I legit thought it was a clever poke at our society. Even when its clouted in "positivity" and even when it seems like people are taking an issue seriously...... they still really aren't. People are still just looking for recognition and at worst just think its fun to say/do hashtag type thing. I liked that little montage.
Yes it's very smug and McKay has been pretty insufferable online to the point where I think he should be disqualified from a best original screenplay oscar nom for this, but I do sadly agree with it's central thesis that everyone in charge of the world is a moron and we're doomed. My issues really come down to - it's too long and not funny enough (it has it's moments but c'mon for the runtime and the talent involved, it really could have been funnier) There are just so many characters and subplots it gets overstuffed. But I do like the movie. Also it's insane that this is the 3rd most watched netflix movie ever already (allegedly) - Movie stars might not matter at the box office anymore but they sure do on streaming services
I wonder how much star power even matters on Netflix vs. Whatever they feel like pushing, with the exception of something with a huge lineup like "Red Notice" or this. Like, Sandra Bullock came out with a movie last month on Netflix and I haven't heard a thing about it.
I haven't heard anything about that Sandra Bullock movie but it's been sitting near the top spots of the top 10 movie charts for weeks now so it must be doing crazy numbers. Netflix is weird. A good chunk of popular Netflix content is basically Yellowstone. (Meaning, Paramount Network's Yellowstone is actually one of the most watched shows on tv but you barely hear a peep about it online)
