Man, that… that’s a legit scorching hot take right there, like wow.

this is exactly my point. It’s a bunch of rich white people patting themselves on the back like they accomplished something with this movie.

The Room wasn't part of the general public zeitgeist. It was released in one theater in Los Angeles but because Wiseau had enough money to put up a billboard it built up a word of mouth. It is very different than having Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Adam McKay as the faces of your film and getting a big Netflix release.

I have always felt it was cruel for people to laugh at The Room because Wiseau is at best incompetent and at worst dealing with some mental health issues. There is a smugness to mocking it that seems filthy to me. It is like dunking on your nephew's second grade shoebox diorama.

I made an oath to never watch The Room again but I would gladly break it than having to sit through this again. Hell, I’d rather marathon Neil Breen movies if you wanna be spicy about it.

Nowadays, yes it is very much in the public zeitgeist. Doesn’t matter where it started. I agree about laughing at the movie. I was just using it as an example of an objectively bad film that has gained a lot of popularity.

I still say the son of Barry Levinson writing dialogue about the struggles of being a working black actor and having them said by the son of Denzel Washington was far less tolerable than pretty much anything in this.

luckily I haven’t watch that movie.

  8. I guess I just don't really understand the liberal propaganda angle people are taking. Is it because Meryl Streep is playing a right-wing president, or because Ron Pearlman is playing a racist veteran? I know climate change is an issue that has been obviously (and unfortunately) politicized, but impending global destruction is a real issue that affects literally everyone, which is why this actually worked for me. It's not particularly smart or subtle (again, I guess I just found the film more enjoyable than most), but if anything, this could have gone harder on how different types of media would react to/treat such an impending threat. I found the media itself to be more the target of the film's "satire" and didn't find the politics to be nearly as prevalent.

I'm saying this as a leftist individual that can't stand neolib shit, so this is a genuine take/question and not just shitposting or a defense. Do people just value subtlety that much? Is there not value to going stylistically over the top? Maybe I'm just bad at analyzing film.

The Room is so bad that it’s good. It’s (arguably) not meant to be taken seriously. It’s also such small stakes and the plot focuses on a ridiculous toxic relationship. I haven’t seen it yet but pretty sure this movie is meant to be taken as serious and provocative, a broad statement on humanity. They really shouldn’t be compared.

The Ariana Grande song is like the worst think you would see on an episode of Samantha Bee's show.

The film makes the same mistake Democrats make, mistaking Republicans for stupidity when they are actually acting in rational self-interest. The reason Republicans (and let's be honest, most Democrats) don't care about climate change is because they make a lot of money not caring about climate change. You might say "yes, but what about when it comes to their lives?" but one of the most tragic parts about climate change is that the poor are going to suffer disproportionately more than the wealthy from flooding, droughts, and famine. Rich people will just buy a home inland. If anything, comparing it to a planet-ending comet makes it easier for people to dismiss the threat of climate change as hysteria.

Also last thing I want to say before I actually watch this trash is that it annoys me none of the writers of this film know the difference between a comet and an asteroid.

I genuinely don't understand why you want to watch this if you've already decided it's trash lol. Is it morbid curiosity?

I’m not rushing at all to watch it—will probably be a few weeks—but I like to watch most of the year’s big movies as it approaches award-season. I also used to like McKay (Stepbrothers might be my fav comedy). I already have a feeling this will be very bad based on these reactions, and yet still probably not as bad as some are making it out to be.

Yeah see this is the shit that makes me not care to defend this movie lol. McKay and Sirota have been basically saying the same shit on Twitter all weekend. How dare you criticize this movie's merits as a movie? This is fucking serious shit we're shedding light on!

Well guys that's all there is to critique. Because here's what any person who is online enough to read these tweets can "learn" from this movie: nothing.

And again, I found it mostly entertaining!

Yea, it's insulting to equate critics calling your movie bad to climate change denial and disinformaton. McKay strikes me a bit of a child after this.

While reactions online are bad, it’s pretty clear a lot of the general public likes this movie. It’s all my mom wanted to talk about at Christmas. And it’s been the #1 on Netflix since it released. Idk, I don’t think it’s bad that a lot of people are seeing this?

It definitely sheds more light on why Will Ferrell won’t talk to him anymore and I don’t blame him, I wouldn’t want to deal with McKay’s bullshit either.

For me, it’s just obvious, bad satire that provides no insight or clever perspective to what it’s satirizing. I still laughed at some stuff and thought there were some good performances, but it all feels like the cinematic version of clapter. We all are living through very tough times that are ignored or glossed over by politicians and companies/celeb culture. I don’t need a movie to tell me that’s how this is going to go because that’s how it’s already going and no one from the other side of the aisle is going to be swayed by it.

I agree with a lot of what McKay believes, but I have a tough time with how he tries to frame it in his movies.

I agree that I don’t think this is swaying anyone on the other side of the aisle or anything. It may read as obvious to us, but I do think there are a lot of people who DON’T think about this stuff 24/7, or spend half their day online. If this movie is speaking to them, good on it?

I don’t know, as others have said, I don’t think this movie is particularly worth defending. But I didn’t find it’s existence offensive.

I wish this moved faster and went for more comedy, because when they let Jonah talk it’s great. It’s nowhere near as bad as some of y’all are saying but for sure disappointing. I thought VICE was fantastic.

I'm sorry to bring this back but I feel the need to ask. Do the people in here that liked Old like it ironically? Like, holy shit what a terrible movie that was. Absolutely atrocious acting from the whole cast (like maybe the worst I've ever seen in a movie by a successful director), horrible editing, dumb twists and stupid characters and dialogue

I watched it with my family and we were treating it like The Room by the 15 minute mark. I enjoyed it like that at least

No, it's just a really well made movie. Some of the best camera movements this year, haunting images like the woman with broken bones, the touching end to the family.
