Idk about scene classic, but it’s incredibly good and I think a year of consistent touring could have seen them really blow up
Yeah this album bangs start to finish. The closing orchestral movement alone puts them in their own class as a new artist. This record is special. The only thing it doesn't have as much as other "scene classics," for me, are really quotable lyrical moments. The vocals feel more like another instrument here, and I love singing slong, but rarely do I remember the lyrics.
Yeah, I don’t know if I’d call this a scene classic, but it surely would have benefited from them likely getting some nice opening spots for bands like PUP or something. Instead, I feel like it’s kind of lost in the shuffle.
I guess when i said scene classic i was also thinking cross over appeal. Maybe I’m giving to much credit to their 8.6 BNM lol but they seemed set to make the transition to fit the same space as bands like Japandroids / Cloud Nothings. Wide spreed indie appeal/festival circuits, etc. Which is a transition a lot of bands from this scene have trouble making.
I see what Matt is saying. They were slated to play the Pitchfork Music Festival this year in Chicago, and that 8.6 from Pitchfork probably helped them get on the festival, but it was really cool to see them on the lineup. A festival like that isn’t super easy to get on and a lot of the artists who play have “made it” so to speak.
Earlier in the year my general vibe was ANGRY and this album fit that well. These days my general vibe has been SAD and DEFEATED and it works less well for that lol. Still think it’s amazing though.
it..... took me a second to realize you meant bear vs. shark i thought it was batman vs. superman and was very confused and disappointed
"I'm gonna grab your dog leg superman!" - Batman from the 2016 movie Batman Vs. Superman OR who could forget the deleted scene "Superman tossed me around like I had dog legs Alfred." Iconic
