Liked Space Babies more than expected, the nappies joke was dumb, chemistry between Millie and Ncuti is instant. Devil’s Chord ripped. So much fun. Really am enjoying the fantasy element. Agree about the musical numbers, but I think they’re meant to play up the fact that things are not as they should be.
I felt myself age 200 years when Ruby said she was born in 2004 lol. scariest moment in both episodes
Steven Moffat confirms he penned 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special this is interesting! first time ever the current showrunner hasn't written the Christmas special
I fell off the show for a while, where should I start with the new Doctor? I know there were some specials after Jodie’s seasons but don’t know if those tie into the new guy
I’d definitely start with the specials if you’re not wanting to watch every episode since you dropped off.
Definitely watch the specials. They basically function as the series finale for the Doctor Who series that began in 2005, but shouldn't be hard to follow without seeing all of Jodie's seasons. The new season is pretty much a 2nd reboot, but in the same vein as 2005 where it doesn't erase what came before, but just wipes the slate clean. There might be a couple minor things that make you scratch your head. Like why the doctor is considered "adopted" by the timelords now, but if you just roll with it you'll be fine.
Only watched Space Babies so far from the new episodes. It was... interesting. I didn't hate it though.
They’re the first episodes on Disney+. They aren’t grouped with the series, so you’ll have to search them separately. The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, and The Giggle
yeah it goes three specials > The Church on Ruby Road > the new season, which they marketed as series 1 just to be extra damn confusing I appreciate the big budget but... some weird choices since it moved to Disney imo. both starting points for the new viewer, The Star Beast and Space Babies are the weakest episodes of the crop by far so far. I really don't see how they thought either of those would entice in new audience members
Interestingly, the Christmas special aka The Church on Ruby Road is set up as episode 1 of season 1 on Disney+, so Space Babies is technically season 1 episode 2.
some more info about Grand Moff's episodes for those like me who are dying waiting, I'll spoilertag but it's fairly light: nearly did an episode on the Silence/Weeping Angels, till he got the mine idea from Genesis of the Daleks ep 1 (or stole it as he puts it lol) Boom was almost episode 1 but Moffat said it was too dark/intense to start with, especially for Ruby. he wrote it thinking one thing we don't see often in DW is 'nail-biting tension' [*] says writing for the show again came very easy but he threw out pages and pages to get to the mine quicker. he even ran the tone meeting as if he was still showrunner cos Russell wasn't there the upcoming Christmas special is his 50th script for the show (which is the record btw). teased it may be his last but... not the first, second or third time he's said that lol. also said he didn't love ending his original run with Twice Upon a Time [*] Moffat hasn't read the series 14 finale, but has the series 15 one for some reason that we'll know when we get there apparently
great episode but middle of the pack for Moffat imo, his average is well above most people's peaks when it comes to this show. definitely felt a bit deflated at the resolution which came outta nowhere. nice to have his dialogue back though next week looks pretty creepy and interesting, let's hope it's good RTD again
I definitely feel like the show is back. All the corniness is tempered by a neat premise and Doctor angst and chemistry between the leads - something missing in the Chibnall era. There’s plenty you can make fun of about the show, and it’s nowhere near the Capaldi-era highs for me yet, but I am really back to looking forward to this which feels good!
wow who snuck this Years and Years episode into my Doctor Who? that was absolutely fantastic and exactly the RTD I wanted after Y&Y and It's a Sin. more of that and less Space Babies/next week's preview which looks like a trainwreck, please, Russell
yes! there's great stuff in between obviously, especially Extremis and The Doctor Falls, but 73 Yards just had that experimental, creepy, thoughtful energy I've really been missing from Doctor Who for a few years now. Russell cooked with this one
I thought it was perfectly fine for a Doctor Who Doing Black Mirror type ep. Not gonna be one I return to, still much better than Space Babies which is the clear worst of the season for me.
it may have been one of my least favourite episodes ever lol, I'd rewatch Space Babies over it in a heartbeat. and that ending was... certainly a choice by Russell, not one he earned in any way with the rest of the episode imo. Ncuti fucking showed up though.
