The worst part about this were the forced jokes and it’s no contest.

Just rewatched it and it felt so much like a full length Saturday morning cartoon

I'm not sure I like the implication that there's something wrong with Saturday morning cartoons.

I was saying that in an entirely endearing way, didn’t come across well in the post! Some of the framing of the shots brought a smile to my face because of it!

We watched this last night. I hadn’t seen any trailers or read this thread so hadn’t got a clue that there would be significant horror moments. My wife did not enjoy that at all and I kind of wish I’d watched it without her because she just wasn’t into it.

I was surprised with a film that has ‘madness’ in the title how little multiversal madness we experienced.

I was shocked by the cameos but glad they were only there for a brief moment of the film.

I was surprised Wanda was the out and out villain from the beginning rather than it being a reveal later in the film. I know we saw her with the Darkhold at the end of Wandavision but that did still catch me off guard.

You would have thought with the multiverse they’d have a multiverse Vision in this. Even if he was just sat with 836 Wanda at home or something.

Oh, also can anyone explain why the bad Strange at the end had three eyes and that seemed to be a bad thing but then ‘our’ Strange at the end gains a third eye and that’s ok?

I am guessing this is a comic book thing, but it felt like when he falls to the ground at the end and it appears it was going to be a bad thing but then in the mid-credits he’s just “yes, I’ll follow you to fix this incursion” and it’s ok he has three eyes.

I don't know that the third eye in and of itself was the bad thing, so much as it being a visible symptom of the corruption by the Darkhold.

The implication here is that our Strange was also corrupted, but to what extent we don't know, and we don't know what the third eye actually does yet.

I don't know that the implication was that the eye was okay or anything; I think it was more a "and the adventure must continue" sort of moment, where I'm sure the ramifications will make themselves known in the future, but for now there's more important things to do.

Anyway, comics Strange corrupts himself every other week, so it's in keeping with his character.

I think Strange doubling over in pain with a third eye was a traditional Raimi untidy ending, leaving his character in a mixed-at-best emotional state at the end of the film. Dude loves that kinda thing.

And then, Marvel Studios being what it is, that stupid mid-credit scene (sorry Charlize Theron my queen) just tacked it on in a cynical, surface level kinda way, without any consideration to how it cheapened the ending.

I mean, did Raimi not direct the post-credits scene? This is a legitimate question because I know that sometimes other people direct the scenes depending.

Cause if he did, then wouldn't he also be partially responsible for not having the scene match the tone of the ending?

I don't know, probably? But, this movie is very much so a mix of Raimi-isms and Marvel-isms, and the ending feels more like the former, while that credit scene feels more like the latter. (Which, doesn't necessarily mean Raimi didn't do it. Dude sometimes does things that he feels like he "should," and even apparently had to be convinced to bring any of his trademark style to this movie. But regardless of whose idea it was, it leans into a Marvel sensibility that I don't care for.)

    That's fine.

Sorry, it just irks me when people say they dislike something but then get selective about the blame. It's like, "I don't like this, but clearly this person isn't responsible, because I like their other work." That's not logical. Just something that rubs me wrong.

Finally watched this. Had a lot of problems with the way they wrote the Wanda heel turn. Felt super lazy and under-developed. Pretty low-tier Marvel, imo.

At least they're getting the "Wanda loses control and becomes a villain" thing out of the way before the mutants show up

The character motivation of "I want to go find the kids I made up in my grief-driven fantasy and am willing to kill as many people as necessary to make this happen" was bad to begin with, but the added bonus of "I need to kill this girl and steal her power rather than just have her take me to a different universe because then if my kids get sick I can go find a cure" was even worse. Lazy, manipulative bullshit. And it felt so much dumber coming after an entire TV series that examined this character's journey through grief.

I would have rather they just said "Uh oh, there's a Wanda from a different universe who is evil for some reason" and went with that.

We watched it last night and I liked it a lot. I am willing to accept the darkhold corrupting Wanda. The visuals were great and the horror-Esque raimi moments were so much fun. Zombie Strange in particular was awesome haha. Yeah the reason for stealing Chavez power was clunky but i didn’t let it take me out of the movie. It def moved pretty fast too, like we jumped right into a new character with a different Strange and got very little time to breathe or really get to know her. The music fight was awesome. The cameos were cool even though im not a comic reader and didn’t watch What If so kind of wasted on a person like me haha.

It’s still weird to me seeing all these individual story movies and shows right now that seemingly aren’t connected at all other than the multiverse stuff happening in them. Like it doesn’t feel like we’re gonna get a full on team up for a lonnnnng time. The only hint of connection/team ip we’ve had in phase 4 movies/shows so far is Wong showing up at the end of Shang Chi, as far as I can remember. I guess if you count Strange being in Spider man but that was obviously completely separate from this movie with no connection other than the mention of it at the start to America when they met her.

lol this was a very weird thing to see in a marvel movie.

also is it me or did we NOT get the spooky looking strange saying “things just got out of hand” like in the trailer?

I think the line was said, but by someone else? Not surprising, Marvel does that a lot with their trailers as a spoiler deterrent.
