it can be really hard for someone in the band to also be the engineer. idk how kurt ballou does it. but conor murphy of foxing went to the same college as me studying the same degree i was, audio production, and he has completely stepped aside in foxing because he doesnt want to do it. im good friends with their live sound guy tho, his roommate who i had hella classes with.

Oh totally. It just gets super grating. Listening to your own song over and over and over again. And Robbie (bass player in my band), part of it was we self recorded our whole record, and that was a lot of work in and of itself. Then to look at all these tracks and think “okay now i have to do THIS portion of it all”, it was overwhelming for him. Well probably never mix and master our own stuff ever again.

like ive said, mixing my own music is so much harder than mixing for clients. clients tell me what they want, i do it, i correct what they want corrected, everyones happy. mixing my own shit? i dont know what the fuck i want. im a fucking audio engineer. im picky as shit and nothing is ever good enough.

Yeah, that was from '05-'08, but it's the same neighborhood, and actually the same block, where I live and own a home right now! It's on the south(west) side, a small, quiet neighborhood called McKinley Park with Bridgeport just to the east and Pilsen just to the north.

The old apartment was a 3 bed/1 bath, on the ground floor, but it had a huge living room, a dining room, and a decent-sized kitchen, and was only about a 10-minute walk from the train (35/Archer on the Orange Line).

I've actually heard good things about McKinley Park from a friend who knows the city well and the Chicago subreddit...probably not a place I'd go out of my way to see, but seems like a decent place to live. Kinda like Jefferson Park where I just spent three years before moving out to Des Plaines.

I’m getting an sm58 for Christmas. With that + GarageBand do you think I could do a decent enough production job that it’ll sound good when you mix/master it?

for sure just pay attention to noise room when you record and mic position on your instruments

Oh cool, most people have never heard of it. There's not really much here to bring someone for a visit, unless you know someone here, or if you play in one of the sports leagues at the park. There's not a lot of night life or anything, but I have 2 young kids so that's not really my scene anymore anyway, and it makes it great for a young family, especially where we are, a block from the library and a block from the park. There's also easy access to the rest of the city via the train or the expressways, and we're not that far from Bridgeport, Pilsen, West Loop, South Loop, or Chinatown.

I also really love that it's culturally diverse, with a large hispanic population and a growing asian population.

Normally when I read things like this I think, "well, that's incredibly hyperbolic." But to be quite honest, I actually haven't ever experienced anything like this album before. I haven't listened to a whole lot this year, but it is my AOTY.

If anyone is able to listen to it often, I'm not sure they're human
