Some more context for the movie. Still kinda confused. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/m...ental-trailer-director-pixar-film-1235264331/
After watching the trailer, this comes off as yet another kids movie in which children questioning social norms are inevitably vindicated as smarter than their parents. The only failing of our protagonist will be that she didn't question the wisdom of her elders sooner. After all, what can the previous generation offer but fearful, insular bigotry? If only they had the intelligence of youth! This trope is so tired not even Pixar's animation can save it at this point. Please, at least offer some subtlety in your characterizations.
No one's advocating for bigotry, but thanks for the willful misinterpretation. All I'm pointing out is that many of these movies have become so heavy-handed that the plots practically write themselves, which removes intrigue from what otherwise might be a more impactful story. And no, "intrigue" does not justify a character's bad behavior as right, but kids should be exposed to complex stories to learn to grapple with difficult ideas. Right now, we seem to err with narratives so simplistic that it's difficult to imagine them challenging anyone's mind.
That’s not really what you said though and again they’re kids movies so if you make them super complex they’re not going to pick up on the themes. Just a weird stance.
Fair point, I just think Pixar's shown they can unpack similar themes with greater nuance in the past. Hopefully they can regain that level of artistry again.
