Out of filmmakers his age it is really only Scorsese who has continued to be as relevant this deep into their respective careers
There are some directors who were great up until their death, but there is definitely a drop off overall. You just get too tired to do another take or you choose shortcuts over shooting on location or you remain loyal to cast and crew that maybe does not fit. Like anythong else, the hunger to prove yourself is what drives a lot of greatness.
Wish I liked any of his stuff at all. Every time a new one comes out I convince myself “this is the one” and it never is.
Taxi Driver aside since he did not direct it, Mishima and First Reformed are incredible and American Gigolo, Light Sleeper and Hardcore are great. I need to see Card Counter and Master Gardener still in terms of newer stuff, and Cat People and Blue Collar in terms of older "classics"
His stuff the last 15 years or so is incredibly hit or miss but what about Eastwood? Dude is 95. Sully, Richard Jewell, and Juror #2 all went hard.
Any of this stuff I’ve seen, which includes everything you followed up this post with except cat people
Sometimes I wonder thought how much directing a 95 year old man is actually doing on set and maybe if his DP or 1AD is basically acting as shadow director.
Oh, not including taxi driver either. I obviously like that lol. Just talking about his directorial stuff.
Also back in the day I used to think Munich was such a badass thriller. I can't imagine watching it now in 2026 without getting very pissed off at the subject matter.
Catch Me If You Can is a 5 star movie. His 2000s run is mostly bangers except The Terminal and Crystal Skull.
