Spielberg has been a sicko one time that I can recall, the mirror scene in Fabelmans. Edit: Also i guess putting his mom in a see through dress with car lights shining on it.
this was good, the plot kind of falls apart if you put any thought into it especially the magic space rocks that always do exactly what the plot demands but that's alright Emily Blunt was absolutely phenomenal, least believable part of the movie was her being with Wyatt Russell as a slacker musician guy
Sure, horrifying, but also based in fact. There are plenty of horrifying scenes in movies made by non-sickos
This reminds me of how my co-worker doesn't like saying WAP (wireless access point) like "waap" because it reminds him of that dumb song, so he said it in a way that immediately made me say "Okay, maybe don't do that either."
I went into this thinking I was not going to like it but I ended up actually very much enjoying it! I thought Emily Blunt in particular was excellent in this!
Have not read through the thread yet, but I've been thinking about this a lot since I left the theater last night. I don't think I can say it was good in a traditional sense - overstuffed with underdeveloped themes and characters and distractingly miscast in places. At the same time...it is so refreshingly, uncompromisingly idealistic and sincere. The scene where people are stepping out of Emily Blunt's way because she's appearing to them as someone they lost felt so goofy to me now (as did them rolling out the alien live on air at the end), but I also couldn't help but think both scenes would have worked and gone absolutely crazy 40 years ago?? Truly feels like a case of the world changing while the director stays the same. And once I got on that wavelength and treated the film as genuine Spielbergian escapism, it worked way better for me. Literally grew on me over the course of the runtime and while the film itself has issues (and I would completely understand it not working for someone), I wound up finding it utterly fascinating. And for whatever reason, I found the abduction sequence to be absolutely captivating, weird CG and all. It really filled me with that unique combination of beauty and dread that he tapped into with Close Encounters (which is obviously the better film).
yeah i mean my main takeaway from the film was that if you take it for what it is it’s a fun time. i would definitely call it a good movie
Eve Hewson for sure. I thought Emily Blunt was great in the final third and wouldn't call her miscast, but I do think the relationship with Wyatt Russell was distracting and it's hard to put my finger on why. I thought there was a larger age gap between them until I actually looked it up. She's obviously somewhat motherly with him and it's like they got the archetypes for each character right -- they filled those archetypes with two very capable actors -- but the chemistry was off for me.
Wyatt Russell rules but he was very goofy in this movie in a way that didn't always work lol did not realise Bono's daughter was Jane, I thought she was great in this
agree about the age gap, definitely did not perceive them to be the same age at all until the flashback sequence
yeah, definitely feels like they cut a sequence where we see what Jane does or how she finds them before magically showing up at the news station at the end.
i think eve and wyatt’s characters were just poorly written and not fleshed out at all, more of a fault of the script than the actors
