From 2006 til like idk the early 2010s I was convinced The Departed was a masterpiece. It's an absurdly watchable movie with an incredible cast clearly having a ball, but it's nowhere near his best.
The Departed is good, just not on that top tier. He doesn't really capture any specificity of the Irish mob.
just gonna rank my favorites and not try to be objective or whatever 1. Color of Money 2. Goodfellas 3. King of Comedy 4. Casino 5. Raging Bull 6. Mean Streets 7. Taxi Driver 8. Irishman 9. Departed 10. Hugo
1. Goodfellas 2. Taxi Driver 3. Raging Bull 4. The Irishman 5. The Wolf of Wall Street 6. Casino 7. The King of Comedy 8. Silence 9. Hugo 10. The Departed there are a few I haven't seen, including The Age of Innocence, Cape Fear, and Who's That Knocking On My Door
First time I saw Casino as a teenager I disliked it. Definitely one that I needed some more film knowledge and maturity in order to appreciate.
I mean to hold Color of Money over any other Scorsese film is abnormal, it’s bound to make people curious
After doing my third re watch of The Irishman recently it’s just so good. Raging Bull is definitely a stone cold classic, but I went GF. Especially since a lot of the GF alumni are in The Sopranos which is my favorite show.
Even with the multiple Scorsese joints I haven’t seen, feel very comfortable just saying Goodfellas. I mean how could it not be
The Aviator is underrated still really want to see Silence and think it looks really interesting. never seen Cape Fear all this time.
Haven’t seen The Departed in forever, but always loved that one and am surprised to see it so low on so many lists. Now I’m afraid to ever revisit it, haha. Maybe I never will and it can just live in my head as a good one Wolf didn’t really hit for me like it seemed to for others and could never put my finger on why since I never gave it a second go
1. Christ 2. Taxi Driver 3. Goodfellas 4. Irishman 5. Bull 6. Wolf 7. Comedy 8. Innocence 9. Mean Streets 10. Alice Knocking/Departed flirted with the top 10
i think newman is fantastic in it and it’s, imo, scorsese at his sleekest. it’s basically a sports movie, and the peak version of that. also, i tend to prefer the subject matter to another iteration of him dealing with mob violence
No love for casino? I'm shocked. Recently rewatched Irishman. Definitely Definitely top tier scoorsese
eh not really. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull are probably the most popular picks for number 1, but Last Temptation is well respected by a lot of film scholars and critics. Color of Money less so. I’m also prepared to defend the pick! It gets at the core of what so much of Scorsese’s work is about: the struggle to be moral in an amoral world, it just features a character who devotes his life to the greater good rather than crime or violence, ie the Travis Bickles, Rupert Pupkins, Frank Sheerans, Jordan Belforts, Jake LaMotts, Henry Hills, etc. It’s Scorsese’s reckoning with how much harder it is to be good than to be bad, how daunting that temptation is, and questioning if it’s even worth it to fight it. And in the climax in those final moments on the cross, the film burns out in one of the most powerful moments of pure cinema I’ve ever seen. It’s magic.
