I totally get the appeal of a performance like that, but it’s super not for me haha. Found it actually kinda hard to listen to
Ugh, I absolutely love how raw his vocals are in the performance - you can feel the emotion behind them. Also when the guy gets up to run to the piano is toooooo good. Honestly it might be my favorite recorded live performance since this one:
Yeah, I guess it doesn’t really read to me like a super emotional performance as much as it does just him and the band wildin for a minute. He is already very effectively relays real passion with his voice on record while largely maintaining composure and singing his ass off, whereas a performance like this just sounds kinda busted haha. Different strokes. Looks like a fun time though no denying that That Volcano Choir joint fucks though, hard agree
Abhi/Dijon is dope. I think I like the early singles best. Skin, Violence, Stranger, Wild... The new stuff hasn't quite hit as hard.
Ok I forgot, I definitely heard some Abhi//Dijon stuff way back… it’s been years though so I’ll have to revisit.
I remember sending Montana to a friend way back when, and him being like “yeah man I’m not feeling this”. He texted me a couple days ago like “dude check out this singer called Dijon. He’s so good”. A great character arc and a very satisfying I Told You So lol
ready to call this album a masterpiece personally, that film really drove the feeling home all the more, despite my mild disappointment that the whole album didn’t get played — what did get played and the little extras like the 1,000 Miles jam were spectacular and kinda made up for it. the performances just have off the charts levels of passion and vigor, it highlighted and expanded on the already present loose, roomy vibes of the record. I immediately hit play on the record once it ended lol
I really do think this album is gonna be an all-timer for me, obviously it’s early to tell and so that probably seems hyperbolic, but I just am constantly thinking about it or finding bits of different songs in my head now months on. I consciously try not to listen to it too much and overplay it but I also only ever wanna listen to it lol. that bit about wanting to hear the biggest pop stars in the world with just one room mic was just revelatory to me in terms of really getting a glimpse into his brain and further clarifying my understanding of the world or space this album exists in. it’s a breath of fresh air to see someone of such a high caliber of songwriting prowess and pop sensibility (in the most general sense of the word) so invested in this kind of approach, personally speaking.
Just caught him opening for Bon Iver. Great set. The Absolutely tracks were performed much less... unhinged than in the film, but the upbeat ones were still very different from the album versions. People went nuts when they went into The Dress but you could tell the energy was a little stifled due to it being so different lol
