The only Inarritu movies I've seen are 21 grams, birdman and the revenant. I don't really remember 21 grams, I thought Birdman and The Revenant were fine when I saw them but don't remember much of either of those as well.

Inarritu is especially bad at comedy. I'm here to check out whatever Cruise is cooking up

the look of this definitely reeks of the tropic thunder role which is far and away the least funny, most try-hard shit in an otherwise pretty funny movie.

outside the M:I series and the occasional highlight that comes from working with one of the very best working directors (i.e. EWS, WotW, Magnolia, Collateral) his roles and movies are really not that interesting for the most part. unless you really have a fondness for the 80s shit I guess but I do not

I haven't rewatched any of his movies but I'm curious now because I don't remember hating or even really disliking any of them (outside of maybe rolling my eyes at Babel) but his haters seem pretty passionate.

They're showing Amores Perros at the local theater this weekend. Maybe I'll go.

    Edit:
I do remember feeling like a lot of his movies were trying too hard to be smart/clever and tie everything together in some Seinfeld kind of way.

I'm far from the biggest Oz Perkins guy but he's got nothing on the world's actual most terrible yet continuously hired auteur, Drake Doremus.

    Worst current directors:

    1. Emerald Fennell
    2. Jason Reitman
    3. Taiki Waititi
    4. Post-Greece Yorgos Lanthimos
    5. Post-Dogville Lars von Trier
    6. Nicolas Winding Refn
    7. Andrew Dominik
    8. Ruben Ostlund
    9. Todd Phillips
    10. Alejandro Inarritu

Aronofsky misses the list because his last one is decent and Garland probably belongs but I think people would try to swat me if I put him on.

A lot of people I respect think NWR is a master. I have been meaning to watch his post-Drive films

Back in the tinychat days there was a poster who hated me but then he was talking about how much he hates Refn and I said "hey he makes some good points" and everyone else in the room got so mad.

  13. assassination of jesse james alone lifts dominik out of that group. it's the best thing any of them (excluding the LVT and Yorgos stuff you excluded) have worked on by many magnitudes

I don’t think anyone’s riding for Garland that hard.

    I liked Birdman

I have the weird opinion that the best Garland work is that show he did, DEVS. I enjoy Annihilation but not as much as others seemingly do. His others are not great.

Jesse James is good, but not better than Aronofsky's The Wrestler. Blonde and Killing Them Softly were so bad that it overcomes one good movie.

It has calmed down a little but around the time of Annihilation and Ex Machina it was pretty intense.

NWR has made a fair amount of shit but Too Old to Die Young might be in my top 30 or so series of all time.

Post Dogville LVT made a bunch of great stuff.

The Neon Demon is so good, and I've come around on Only God Forgives. Looking forward to Her Private Hell (especially because of its rancid reaction at Cannes)

I honestly like all of his post-Dogville movies except Manderlay and The Boss of it All lol, even the hybrid doc The Five Obstructions. Haven't had the heart to check out Kingdom Exodus but it seems to be well-liked. If anything I'm more likely to revisit The House That Jack Built than, say, Breaking the Waves.
