Today is a great day to share an early listen to the new single from Diane King, called “Sky”. The song is the title track from King’s forthcoming LP, Sky, that hits all streaming services this Friday. This key song from Diane King reaches for the heavens and hits its intended feel with veteran ease. If you’re enjoying the single, please consider pre-ordering the new album of Sky here, and stay tuned for the full album stream later on this week.

What is the story behind the song, “Sky”? What does it mean to you and what inspired it? What is it about?

I was thinking one day about how I could describe this love I was feeling and experiencing. It was beyond measure, no end to it, and always there. I wanted to communicate that somehow. It occurred to me that the sky was the perfect metaphor for this kind of love. So, I started writing the song: “If ever you wonder ’bout my love or there’s any question just how much, look to the heavens and you’ll see, Baby, how much you mean to me.”

It’s the title track from your forthcoming album, which is being released this Friday. What made you choose Sky as the album title? Is this a stand-out song on the album for you? In what way does it stand apart from other songs on the album and/or in what way is it similar to other songs on the album?

I actually picked “Sky” as the title track first. Then, I selected the songs to go on the album with it. Originally, I thought I might do all “happy” and “in love” songs. But then I thought that’s not everyone’s experience or where they are. That’s not the whole story. Life and love can and will be hard sometimes, challenging, sad, and a struggle. That’s all a part of the journey. So, I also included some songs that I wrote from that place, and all are written from my own experience. The song “Sky” is interesting in that it’s a very solid representation of all my writing and music, I think, especially musically – a deep groove, cool drop-D acoustic guitar riff, big three-part harmonies – and lyrically, as it’s full of truth and love.

What do you hope that listeners take away from hearing this song? What kind of feedback have you gotten from folks who have heard it?

I hope folks can use “Sky” to tell their loved ones how much they mean and how much they love one another. And express that even when they’re not together, look to the sky and remember that’s how I love you, and I’m always there for you. You know, sometimes I’ll hear another writer’s song and think, “YES! Exactly! I couldn’t explain it, but there it is! Like this song says!” So, that would be so cool for this song to be a way for folks to express their love to one another.

Do you have any particular memories about recording this song specifically? What was it like to work on this particular song in the studio?

”Sky” was the first song we started working on, and rightly so! It had only ever been heard with me and my acoustic guitar. When we started recording the other instruments, based on how I had always heard them in my mind, it’s just one of the most satisfying and rewarding things for a songwriter and producer – to finally have the song the way it was always meant to be!

What kind of a vibe were you going for with this song? Did it end up sounding like you thought it would before you went into the studio, or did it go in a different direction?

It totally ended up where I wanted it. The perfect mix of intentional and free-spirited. It’s clean and natural and authentic and heartfelt… very much from my Appalachian soul.

Our readers will be able to come back to Chorus.fm to hear the full album this Thursday, a day before it is being released. Is there anything you can tell our readers about the album as an exclusive teaser or sneak peek, or do you have a fun or funny or interesting story about the album that you haven’t told anyone else yet?

I’m so proud of this project and all that has gone into it – from the writing of these songs, to the journey to get here to a place where I could do this project, to the brilliant musicians, to crossing paths with my co-producer, Stephan Oberhoff, who TOTALLY got me as an artist, songwriter, and co-producer, to friends and family on the sidelines (and some in the trenches with me) cheering me on and on and on, to meeting the love of my life who inspired so many of these songs and is always right there beside me. Now, I hope my beautiful songs that I love so much can go out into the world and do some good.
