So I randomly downloaded the beta last night, never played destiny before, reminds me of Halo.

Serious question, after playing the beta are folks still feeling this will be goty?

I don't think anybody was ever feeling this would be goty.

    Will be fun though.

Yeah I don't think it's going to win GOTY from any publications or anything. I think it has the serious potential to be "Shooter of the Year," just because Bungie's shooting mechanics, which are always on point, were never better than in the original Destiny and I see no reason why Destiny 2 should be any different. The feel of playing Destiny is so smooth and fluid, it's one of the main reasons I love the game so much.

That said, is this the game I will probably spend the most time on this year? Almost certainly. Does it have the potential to be my personal favorite game of the year? Definitely. But in a year that saw the release of Breath of the Wild, and also a new mainline Super Mario game coming in two months, I don't think Destiny 2 has a shot at any overall GOTY awards.

Wolfenstein will prob win shooter of the year. Destiny might win cooperative game of the year lol.

Yeah I forgot about Wolfenstein. For me, it depends on mechanics as to what defines the best shooter of the year. I think both of those games are going to have really good campaigns with strong stories, but I just prefer Destiny's gameplay to the more arcade-y, old-school-type shooting of Wolfenstein or, for another example, DOOM from last year. Not that I don't really enjoy those games (I do), it's just personal preference about what gameplay style I like more.

A Wednesday release is weird. Oh well, not complaining.

It is. I think it might be because of the rolling release times, like how Australia gets to play it first.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

I definitely don't think it'll be GOTY, but it'll probably be the game I sink the most time into.

Oh that's right haha...sorry I was only factoring PC, I haven't owned a console since Xbox 360, no idea what goes on in that world.

I fooled around with the beta on my PC, it runs alright...

I think I'll end up double dipping.

Ok more annoying new player questions...how do you guys get the most enjoyment out of destiny? Is it heavy on co op quests? Are quests and raids the same thing?

The main things to do in Destiny are: story missions, strikes (3 player dungeons), raids (6 player, mechanically unique dungeons), patrols (simple quests you perform in open areas) and crucible (PvP). You can play the entire thing co-op, if you like, or you can play the story/patrols solo and use matchmaking for strikes (I don't remember if they added raid matchmaking in 2, it wasn't in 1).

Personally, I think raids are far and away the best content in Destiny, and I also enjoyed doing the harder/weekly versions of strikes they put out with specific modifications (X type of weapons deal more damage, shields don't recharge, you take more damage in the air, things like that) but everyone finds the thing they like the most.

So, basically, Destiny is an all-in-one package sort of deal because it has a ton of PVE and PVP content. You have a lengthy story campaign that can be completed entirely cooperatively or entirely solo; the game will scale the challenge based on how many people are playing (usually with more adds). In addition, Destiny 2 will have much larger explorable environments called patrol zones that you can make your way through, and there is a ton of content to do there. They've added side-missions called "Adventures," larger quest chains for after you've completed the campaign called "World Quests," and patrol missions which are little short tasks you can take up for small rewards; they pop up all over the patrol zones and respawn when you load into a new instance.

There are cooperative "strikes," which have matchmaking and are sort of longer missions that always end in a boss fight. These are usually good ways to grind for loot as the bosses typically drop loot when you kill them. They're arranged into playlists so you can just constantly play random strikes one after another without having to back out or select a new one manually in between.

The raids are the culmination of the Destiny PVE experience. Six-player cooperative gauntlets designed to test your skills with the game's mechanics. These are typically organized into discreet encounters, either with a boss or some kind of mechanical puzzle to solve while killing adds, which are then usually separated by environmental navigation challenges (often taking the form of what the community lovingly refers to as "jump puzzles"). They're so fun and you get sweet loot from them.

Then there's the PVP. They've changed all game modes to 4v4 and made a conscious effort to tailor each map around specific game modes. All the loot you earn anywhere in the game is usable in PVP, and you can also earn loot by grinding PVP matches as well if you get a lucky drop.

But basically the main fun of the game is the loot grind. Trying to get the one gun you've been wanting or running the raid as many times as you can to earn the raid armor/weapons, things like that. It's a smooth and incredibly fun shooter experience with RPG systems and an addictive loot grind. If that sounds like fun, then this is your game.

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS. Haven't played original Destiny in a while but I sank thousands of hours into the first one. So excited for the grind. Definitely taking off of work when the raid drops

Just to touch on this, I'm so glad to see they will be balancing the PvP side of things separately from the PvE. I'd like to thank all the console beta complainers for this haha (me being one of them). I didn't like my cooldowns and gear being nerfed in PvE because they were OP in PvP.

Did they say they were doing that? Or did they just make the changes we wanted them to make regarding the super/grenade cooldowns, grenade power levels, and other things like that? I didn't think they were balancing them separately. Could be wrong though.

Yeah ya know, the changes they made lead me to believe that's how they would be operating going forward - but you're right, they never said specifically they were going to handle them individually. So I guess we'll see? Being someone who doesn't play any PvP, I'm kinda hoping they handle each separately since it's two totally different play styles imo.

Yeah I feel you on that one for sure. I play a lot of both PVE and PVP, but I kinda am still iffy about the changes to the weapon system and stuff all in the name of PVP balance, but I'm confident the game will still be fun to play. Just going to miss the Primary/Special/Heavy system and also definitely going to miss random rolls on weapons.

The changes to weapon classification are very easily my least favorite thing about Destiny 2 so far. The way loadouts worked before was perfect and allowed you to have a versatile set of weapons constantly at your disposal. I get why they'd change it for PvP purposes but still...for my PvE purposes it's something I'm a little weary about.

Oh hey, The Farm is available if you're on the PC beta right now. For another hour-ish I believe. There's an actual soccer field with fireworks when you score hah
