  1. Gore is good, I just don’t like it as much as I did when it was released.

    Chi albums > Non-Chi albums

That's my ranking from here on out.

Chi is the best, no doubt...

But DE and KNY are masterpieces

Those are great albums to be sure, but I'm talking about the shift that came after Chi's death that is very apparent on DE, KNY, & Gore, with production, Steph's riffs (or lack thereof), Chino's lyrics and song writing, and the overall tonal shift in the albums. Abe will always be a fucking beast and some of the stuff he pulls off on Gore is fantastic. I just wish I could hear it a little better.

This band means everything to me and has for over 20 years. I've tracked them almost daily for that amount of time so I'm slightly invested in this haha. There are certainly other factors that contribute to the change I perceive (less band member drug use, Chino's ten thousand side projects, etc) Just out of curiosity, were DE and KNY your introduction to Deftones? I've found that most people who started with those albums regard them very highly vs. their back catalog.

I definitely agree about the production. Terry Date is a member of the band, as far as I’m concerned. I really wish they’d work together again, but I don’t see it happening. As far as riffs go, I think Steph’s jump to 7 and 8 string guitars has changed his style significantly. I dig it for the most part, but at times I do miss the riff-centric style he had on Around the Fur/White Pony.

Also, I jumped on board between White Pony and S/T.

I sure wish he'd go back to seven. I think he relies a little too much on that heavy bottom string on the 8.

It's weird, I never really think of Deftones as a "riff" band. Obviously they have some stonkers, but it's their use of lush chords that has always stood out for me.

Yeah ever since S/t they’ve been using the guitar for texture mostly. Which is awesome, don’t get me wrong! I honestly miss Steph’s chord work more than his riffs. Things like Be Quiet, Knife Prty, Hexagram. He seems to mostly chug these days.

Agree with there being a tonal shift in post-Chi music, but how could there not be? I honestly love the more upbeat songs on DE/Gore(Beauty School, Sextape, LMIRL etc). The production is a problem though like Light said. I said earlier in the month I reallllly hope Chino wasn’t lying when he said Steph will be in more control of the sound with the next album.

I still get chills when I hear the Knife Prty intro into that first verse. It's mesmerizing.

I think that's down to Stef to be honest.

You guys have any songs that you used to skip but realized were gems?

For example I've been sleeping on Crenshaw and Sinatra off B-sides, Kimdracula off SNW, and This Place is Death off DE.

Always love adding new songs to my list of favorites.

Kimdracula and Battle Axe never jumped out to me until revisiting the albums years later.

I never skipped it, but Mascara used to be boring to me. Probably one of my fav from AtF, and the first track to show where the direction they were heading in with WP.

Listened to Gore for the first time in a while today. I still really, really dig the musical direction of it. But man, the production really gets in the way, especially on Acid Hologram (although I suspect there's something wrong with Spotify's copy of that particular song).

That album with good clean production would be so killer.

It's funny, I always had a slight issue with KNY production as well but it's the sweetest most powerful sound in the world compared to whatever the fuck Matt Hyde did on Gore.

Their production has mostly been a steady decline over time :(

It's just sad we had the technical capacity 20 yrs ago to make ATF sound as brilliant as it does, yet their last few have been comparative garbage playing the same style of music. Gore is by far the worst, for sure.

You would think Around the Fur would sound at least a little dated by this point, but by God, it’s still so fresh sounding. It’s just oozing with passion. That never gets old.
