Sounds like Chino is responding to the negative feedback they got from Gore and thinking about a more riff-centric album. Chino Moreno Wants Stephen Carpenter's Riffs At The "Forefront" Of Next Deftones Album | Theprp.com
That's too bad. I think the negative feedback had a lot more to do with piss poor production than writing. "Doomed User" was apparently Stephen's biggest contribution, and I find it the weakest point on the record.
I'd put Gore towards the lower half of their albums but I still enjoy it Also happy almost 20 year anniversary to my favorite Deftones album Around the Fur, now with a new piece Deftones on Wild Times, Youthful Confidence Behind Classic 'Around the Fur'
I think the Diamond Eyes/Koi No Yokan era of the band is my favorite, largely because of how refreshing and positive everything was after the drama and infighting surrounding the previous two records and of course everything with Chi. It was just a really great time to be a Deftones fan. Not that there's anything bad going on now or anything. I'm really looking forward to the next album, especially if Stephen is going to be more involved in the writing process.
The DE era was such a positive time for the band. I remember vividly the first week listening to DE. On the cusp of summer ‘10. I remember that bass at the beginning of Prince, the banshee scream at the end of Royal, the callbacks to ATF/WP. I thought it was such a great reform. Even though I love S/T, and SNW they were certainly bleak albums. Especially with all the turmoil surrounding them. It was great to see them bond in friendship in spite of Chi’s accident.
Fall weather calls for KNY for me. What an incredible record. Might be my favorite production they've had post-White Pony as well.
its not so much that I didnt "like" it its just that I didnt think it was as good as what followed. I realize now that I was wrong, ATF is at least better than SNW and Gore for me at least. Either way its all great
I have vivid memories of spending my Christmas money on White Pony one year and listening to Digital Bath in the snow on my paper round. It was wonderful.
Equating albums to different times of the year is probably my favorite thing. Fall is my favorite by far. I vividly remember going on a retreat in college to a cabin in the woods of Georgia right after this came out, so it will always be associated with this time of the year.
I'll never not love this album. You can really hear the passion and energy of a young band getting the chance to prove themselves. And they were forward thinking enough to make an album that doesn't sound dated (sure, it sounds 90s to a degree, but it doesn't sound nu-metal). You get those glimpses of the experimentation that would come with White Pony as well.
"Change" always has been and likely always will be my favorite Deftones song. These guys release incredibly consistent music but nothing hits me quite as hard as that song does.
