Just some random thoughts: Diamond Eyes or S/T are my favorite records front to back, I oscillate between the two but after my discog binge DE is sitting at the top for right now. Hexagram still remains my favorite Deftones song, but This Place Is Death, Digital Bath, Kimdracula, and When Girls Telephone Boys would round out my top 5 This band has some of the best opening tracks I've ever heard I definitely prefer heavier Deftones to atmospheric Deftones but they do both styles super well Chino has grown on me a lot as a lyricist
I think I would have to say Diamond Eyes or S/T is my favorite record by them as well. I just love the vibe of those records. DE is just so strong from start to finish.
I revisited Gore yesterday and I'm still in love with it. I can confidently say that's my second favorite behind Diamond Eyes.
I still love it as well. I see a lot of hate for it elsewhere online and it bums me out. It's not without its production issues, but the songs are incredible.
Ya Gores production is its biggest downfall but the songwriting is there and its really good. I guess the reason I put S/T so high up is because its the first Deftones record I ever heard so I guess thats why I give it the edge over like White Pony or SNW. Around The Fur is also really good but it doesnt quiiiiite hold a candle to the albums that followed it imo. Still, it was definitely ahead of its time. I put Deftones and The National in a playlist because I hate myself and want to be a sad person on this most auspicious and gloomy of days
It's Koi No Yokan for me. Funny enough, I just added the album to my phone a few days ago before the thread bump. It's raining here as well, and I'll probably be listening to it as I play some Overwatch.
Excluding any covers and acoustic/alternate versions of songs, are the only b-sides from this band just Back To School, The Boy's Republic, Crenshaw/I'll Throw Rocks At You You, and Lovers?
I was checking Wikipedia and didn't even see any of these except for Lovers, unless I just happened to miss them
always love reading what you have to say and seeing how your tastes evolve over time. I remember you liking S/T and KNY most (like me) for a while, and while it was cool to feel like I had some company there, it's nice that you've found something in DE that I haven't really. Idk if I prefer one side of their sound over another. I think the reason I love S/T so much, in particular, is they had a great knack for mixing those two elements in a way that was seamless and graceful. Like, a lot of Stef's guitar parts on that album are very aggressive sounding, but a lot of the chords/progressions he uses are still downright pretty to me. The production on the album is also very consistent in its mood and tone, one I find to be pretty atmospheric in itself, even at its heaviest points (When Girls Telephone Boys), the whole album just feels gloomy; like you said, perfect for a rainy day. It's a dynamic I don't feel they nailed until that album and that I also feel they haven't quite captured to that success since. Feels more like the albums surrounding S/T try to separate those elements more, especially DE imo. Anyway, thanks to your posts I'll probably be listening to the self-titled today.
u the best wife there ever was yeah the S/T and WP in particular balance those two sounds more while the other records seem to kind of lean one way or the other. they all have more atmospheric and heavier songs but the S/T and WP have something unique about them that i just cant quite pin down. you nailed it with the production though i think thats the ingredient that really helps solidify that balance.
I still don't understand why they won't work with Terry Date anymore. I get wanting to try new things, but he really captures their sound so well. Still, I'm a big fan of the production on DE and KNY as well, even though I know some people have their issues with them (the latter, mostly).
Smile (Eros) Melanie (Eros song live) Finger Of Death (SNW instrumental demo, played live once with vocals) not to mention numerous other instrumental SNW demos God's Hands (aka Quirk) Hogburg Hop Deftones - (Like) Linus (Like) Linus Some People Answers Hump Christmas Plastic Venison Gift (aka Guest) Freaks
Mascara was the track that really made me love Around The Fur. It will forever remain one of my favorite Deftones tracks.
I think it might be Chino's best song from a lyrical stand point. Spends most of it sounding weird and slightly sinister and then pulls back right at the end with his last line, kind of like he's flipping his card over. It's quite brilliant.
potentially my favorite track of SNW, cool that theyre playing it in set lists. Do they show SNW much love when it comes to playing those songs live?
Not really haha. They're playing Kimdracula at the moment and they've occasionally played Beware over the years but other than that, they barely ever play anything off it. Chino hates it too much, I think.
geez, thats a shame. I had no idea Chino didnt care for it. Its got some great material on it, even if it is my least favorite of the WP-Gore run but hey they cant all be slam dunks
