I feel like this band can never be appreciated enough. There are not many bands who are 8 albums in and still releasing some of their best if not the best music of their careers. Their consistency throughout their discography is historic.
I thought Gore stood out when you compare it to their discography. Much more shoegazey and moody than usual.
I don't think KNY is all that adventurous. Just seems to be following what they did in DE. I think WP, SNW, and Gore are their most adventurous.
same I'm just not a huge fan of that record. it's fine, just not my favorite and I don't think they really challenged themselves all that much with it.
What about Mein ? Those completely atonal chords, Chino's weird performance, and the chorus which doesn't even feel like it is part of the same song. Love it tho edit : and that bridge lol
Yeah, SNW is very experimental. I think most of it works really well. I always forget how much I like that album.
It's a tough listen, I still have a hard time getting through the whole thing at once because of how uncohesive it is.
I wouldn't necessarily frame SNW as intentionally adventurous. I think a lot of it is the result of their disconnect as a band during that writing and recording process, as well as Chino's mindset at the time. Pink Cellphone though is definitely intended to be a bit of a mindfuck
I think SNW flows pretty well. Granted, it took a while for it to grow on me. I started listening to that album in 2012 and it wasn't until last year that I started to fall in love with it. The songwriting and structures are pretty weird for them, particularly on Rapture, Mein, and Rats. Still, there's a ferocity to those songs that really meshes well with how atmospheric they get on that album, especially with Hole In The Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, and Xerces, not to mention the chilling closer Riverie. Idk, it's certainly one of the tougher listens in their discography, but I think it's a rich album and a very rewarding listen. Plus Beware is pretty much their best song
By which you mean, 'fucking excellent Pink Cellphone,' correct? Thumbnail gives it away, but SNW is my favorite (and first) Deftones record.
it just blows my mind that there is a whole f ing record just sitting out there that we havent heard. like damn. i love "smile"
