It's odd, because I always thought production (along with their song titles ) was something they could never really let me down on, but Gore definitely sounds sort of flat to me
I usually go back and forth between Around the Fur, White Pony, and Diamond Eyes for my favorite album of theirs, but KNY definitely has some of their best material imo. Swerve, Leathers, Poltergeist, Entombed, Tempest, Rosemary, What Happened to You?...I mean, damn!
I know I'll get ostracized, but I can't get into Around The Fur anymore. It was my jam in high school and college, but I can't get into it anymore.
It's my second least favorite Deftones album honestly. It's not bad, but everything they released after is better
ATF still has the best production among their catalog, regardless of the content. Which is pretty sad when you think about it. WP was really good too, but everything since has been flawed to varying degrees.
Should be a staple of Deftones Best Of playlists from now on, for sure. I still get blown away by the ending. Chino is unreal on that track.
Why/how does shitty production happen? Don't bands get to listen to the final product and have input before it's released?
I always wondered this too. Like surely Letlive. listened to The Blackest Beautiful months before it was out, but somehow didn't care how bad the mix was????
I wonder this all the time, as someone who's fairly sensitive to production and has had amazingly-written albums from artists I love ruined for me by it. Honestly, I get the feeling a lot of artists just don't care or don't have an ear for it at all. They tend to be right-brained creative people for whom the technicalities are a nuisance. It's funny to think about, but I bet plenty of them are just like average consumers and listen to 128kbps MP3s on iPod earbuds, even their own stuff! Now, obviously that's a big generalization and there are plenty of exceptions, but I've definitely gotten that impression from interviews of some artists I follow.
Deftones posted a video of Rise Against's Appeal to Reason record playing, and Rise Against posted a video of a White Pony record playing. Dropping hints?
Aye, shame the mix is horrendous. Nice little mini scream-off between him and Chino at the end of the second chorus.
Yeah Tim was so drowned out at first, but he rebounded by the end ofnthebfirst part and definitely the second. Chino totally showed him up though at the end there haha
