I got into them this year and KNY is my favorite. I totally understand why WP is held in such high regard though. Same thing with Converge and Jane Doe. AWLWLB is my favorite but I absolutely get how massive JD is for that genre.
I feel dumb because I can't get into Jane Doe as much as I feel I should. I like Axe to Fall and All We Love a lot though.
was just curious, that is all - I too don't know, that is is precisely what I was wondering... if such concept as generational preference exists I suspect they might no need to be all defensive about it
It's a hard album to get into if you aren't into that style. Axe to Fall is great too! Underrated for that band I think
No it's fine, I'm sorry I came off too defensively about it. I'm just not sure I believe in a generational thing. It's probably also why I don't feel particularly attached to albums I once felt nostalgic about anymore. I don't attribute nostalgia or a generational thing to what I like. If I like something I like something. As far as White Pony goes, I understand the massive influence it has had for metal music and it's absolutely a classic. I wasn't paying attention to the band back in 2000 when I was, I guess, nine years old. But from 19-24, it was my favorite Deftones album. Now it's not anymore. Idk if I'm making sense anymore as I type this or if I'm just rambling at this point, but I'm sorry I came off too strongly earlier
I got into them in my late teens with WP and S-T. SNW came out and that became my favorite. I just feel they've gotten better with each release since.
WP was released when I was 15, bought it on the release date loved it from the get-go s/t had to go through a looot of spins to finally click, and now I love it (also, Minerva is my fav probably) SNW immediately trumped the rest, but most of my friends stayed with WP I don't know, sometimes nostalgia factors in, sometimes it doesn't - like everything
Did you get one of the limited edition jewel cases with White Pony? I got the red version...I wish I still had that.
I finally revisited Gore and it actually holds up a lot better than I was expecting. I think I enjoy it more now than I did a few months ago. Great album.
Been a lonnnnng time since I've listened to KNY in full. Some absolutely fantastic tracks on it, but I'm just not crazy with how "clean" the production is still. Goon Squad, Entombed, and Rosemary are sooooo good though.
Leathers, Poltergeist, Entombed, Gauze, Rosemary, Goon Squad, and What Happened to You? are all amazing songs. KNY is so good.
Just went down the rabbit hole of watching all their music videos on youtube. You are the butcher is such a well made piece of work. Makes me enjoy the song a lot more.
Drinking the Phantom Bride Belching Beaver IPA right now. Not crazy about IPA's. So that should show you how much I love this band.
not to relitigate an old argument but the age shit is dumb as hell. i am 27 and bought the s/t the day it came out. white pony is probably their fourth or fifth best record. i could see some having it at 1 for obvious reasons. i could see some having it at six or seven. the age of the listener doesn't mean shit and it's fucking stupid to bring that into the narrative.
Don't completely agree. I would argue experiencing a band's progression in real time over the years often lends to a significantly different perspective than someone younger discovering the whole discography at once. If anything, though, the younger kid looking back at a band like Deftones' 20-year career probably has a more "objective" view uncolored by nostalgia, provided they really spend a lot of time poring over the records.
that's a false narrative. it applies to anyone who listens to the band for the first time. what's the difference between someone in their 40s just now coming to deftones with no frame of reference and someone in their 20s?
