I'm in almost total agreement, but I think DE is in my top tier instead of KNY. Sometimes I go back and forth on that though.
I like them all, they all have their strong points and great songs. The only two I don't revisit anymore are Adrenaline and ATF.
Yeah I love it too, just love the others a bit more but all in all its a stellar catalog i really love DE, it's got some top tier tracks on it but KNY edges it and WP out but just barely
Adrenaline is in the top five, maybe even top three records to come from nu metal. Around The Fur is a perfect heavy rock album. White Pony is their masterpiece. The self titled is an outstanding 'moody' album. Saturday Night Wrist is inconsistent but hits heights that most rock bands just don't hit. Diamond Eyes is a brilliantly cohesive record. Koi No Yokan paints scenes like a movie soundtrack and Gore is them being able to still challenge their fanbase eight records in.
What does it mean to "paint scenes like a movie soundtrack?" Not trying to knock KNY because I think it's a pretty good album, despite it being in my bottom three, but, if you're talking lyrically, Chino has been doing a pretty good job of that since White Pony if you ask me.
Which track is that off of? To me, I would think that means to create moments/memories that are so perfect, they could be captured in a movie scene. Dreamy/Utopia. It can be interpreted different ways, which is pretty neat.
To me, I think most of their albums do a really good job at that, so I don't think it really stands out as a strength for KNY when there are five other albums doing it really well too. That's all I'm saying.
Musically, it resembles a bit like a soundtrack, more so than the others. Think of the video to Romantic Dreams or the first one to Swerve City. The songs on KNY go really well with that sort of 'scene setting'. It doesn't hit as hard as the others, which is why it's possibly my least favourite Deftones album but I think it works more on that level. I listen to White Pony through headphones with my eyes closed. I listen to Koi No Yokan when I'm out and about.
Rosemary is definitely one of their most cinematic songs, in my opinion. That song always transports me.
"Rivière," for me. That opening guitar is so ethereal... Listening to Gore for the first time (headphones, eyes closed, kinda tired) brought a lot of images to mind. Lots of clouds, beaches, impending storms, water turning blood red, and lions, for some reason. Most of these with hues of pink and gold.
I can definitely see those things when I listen to it. I've often thought about writing down the imagery that each of their albums evokes.
So, I know that Gore is out and everything now, but did anybody else ever have dreams about what the album was gonna be called? ...just me then? I dreamt it was gonna be called Shadow Cities.
Seeing them live for the first time tonight! This is probably the most excited I've ever been to see a band live.
Speaking of Gore, I hope they release that song Crest someday soon that was suppose to open the album originally.
